What skills do you need to future-proof your career? How about some power skills... Is it time to ditch the idea of 'soft skills'? As things like communication, leadership and teamwork become even more valuable in an AI world, let's give them the respect they deserve! Great conversation with Isabel Berwick on the Future Work/Life pod this week on future-proofing your career. We talked about a range of topics, including: 🛑 Navigating toxic work culture 🎯 Understanding your own ambition 🔄 Alternatives to management in career progression ⚖️ The realities of balancing career aspirations with personal commitments. 🌱 Late-career blooms And skills, of course. Congratulations to Isabel on the publication of her new book, 'The Future-Proof Career: Strategies for thriving at every stage', this week. Make sure you pick up a copy! #Adaptability #FutureOfWork #NurturingPotential #Growth #AI "Your past doesn’t have to define your future anymore" is a comment that’s given me pause this week. We know that the old model of school → degree → work → career has changed. And last weekend, The Sunday Times published an article that highlighted the growing challenge graduates face when trying to break into the job market. AI screening and ghosting are blocking entry into careers that, only fifteen years ago, were more accessible. As a father of a teenager, I see first-hand how much young adults are doing to get ahead. We tell him: "The more you do, the more you'll experience life." We tell him: "The more you learn, the more you have to offer," because we believe this to be true. The world has never been more accessible to the young, but that’s part of the problem - there’s a supply and demand issue. The number of graduates is rising, while the number of work placements is falling. I believe it’s our shared responsibility to nurture potential in younger generations. While it’s understandable that AI screening and automated interview processes help ease the burden for businesses already struggling to keep afloat, if we pull the ladder up too far, we risk creating a narrow system that actively misaligns talent from opportunity. The future belongs to those who are adaptable, willing to let go of outdated models, and find new ways to connect with the evolving world of work. It’s about working with the winds of change, not against them, and I would like to see more businesses and education institutes come together to explore ways of overcoming this growing issue. I'm beginning a Language of Leadership communication program for graduates entering the job market this Autumn, and would value any insight from businesses and leaders on ways through the current situation. Please reach out with any perspective you feel you can share...

In a previous post, I shared five key points for career considerations that have been beneficial to many individuals. Now, I'd like you to look back on your own career journey. How did you find yourself in your current path? Was it through the guidance of mentors, family, friends, or societal influences? Reflect on your current career status. Are you actively learning, excelling, and growing, or do you feel like you might not be on the right path? Have you Considered ways to enhance yourself, carve out a niche in your industry, and make a meaningful impact. Evaluate your professional network and connections. How strong are your connections with industry peers and experts? How often do you seek guidance from mentors to support your career development? And lastly do you feel there's any chance that AI can compete with your job? What have you done to stand out and have your signature to be unbeatable. What steps have you taken to distinguish yourself and establish a unique presence that sets you apart? You don't necessarily need to answer these questions in the comments section but take 5 mins of your time and reflect on these questions and see how you can augment yourself because the future we are growing will be sophisticated enough to eliminate mediocre. #Let's_Process_Series_02 #GasProcessing #InternshipExperience #EnergyIndustry #CareerGrowth
