By the time that energy is converted into electricity to power the UK’s public buildings, hospitals, schools and homes, almost 60% of it has already been lost or wasted during conversion, transmission and distribution. The UK is consistently on the losing end of an ongoing carbon battle, but energy efficiency remains the fastest, cheapest and most reliable solution to achieving greenhouse gas emission reductions. Take the NHS, which operates over 400 major buildings across the UK. If all of these buildings were to have LED lighting installed – a relatively inexpensive project in the grand scheme of things – the NHS would save at least £1bn by the end of this decade as well as meaningfully reduce its carbon emissions. The UK needs to do more with less, which means focusing on delivering decentralised, local energy solutions at scale that are cheaper, cleaner and more reliable than the country’s ageing and expensive grid. It was a pleasure to speak with @Ali Miraj on LBC Radio yesterday about the world’s pressing energy issues and how I sought to capture this in my book, The Edge. You can listen to our discussion on @Global here: https://lnkd.in/etCT6Eby (timestamp: 1:03:15).
I’ve already messaged you to congratulate you on your involvement… an engaging hour ! For once a balanced and objective view of the way ahead and the key challenges- so much debate these days is entrenched and self interested ….
If you install a fuel cell plus other, complementary distributed energy at a hospital or other site, you can decouple from that ageing, expensive grid and take back control over energy. Ultra-resilient too. Plus there is another grid which can be decarbonised and works very well: https://bylines.cymru/environment/gas-grid-decarbonisation/
Ali Miraj is a fantastic interviewer, makes so much sense - energy efficiency and local energy solutions are critical to not only decarbonisation but also helping public sector budgets.
Have listened to this many times since tuning in to hear Jonathan Maxwell and Ali Miraj on Global LBC. I’m about to listen to it again, taking notes so that when it can no longer be found on catch up, I still have the learning at my fingertips. Thank you Jonathan and Ali!

2mo“…..energy efficiency remains the fastest, cheapest and most reliable solution to achieving greenhouse gas emission reductions.” I cannot agree more Jonathan. The challenge is that it’s not sexy enough (..at the moment!). It also means that it sometimes shines a light on either a maintenance problem or poorly finished / designed projects. I do feel things are improving though.
