Nonprofits are an important part of healthy communities and economies. This year, #CommunityPartner One Voice Central Texas asked: “What if non-profits disappeared for a day?” The answer shows just how crucial your support is. If food access nonprofits like SFC, Keep Austin Fed, and other allies disappeared for even one day, in Central Texas ALONE: 8,372 of our neighbors experiencing food insecurity would not receive meals. 75 farmers would not be able to sell their meat and produce at farmers’ markets like SFC Farmer’s Market $9,105 worth of unused food would be thrown away instead of recovered and distributed. Thank you to our community of supporters in Texas and beyond for supporting our mission to create a just food system where people and the environment thrive! Want to make a lasting impact? Outdated Crop Insurance Limits Sustainable Agriculture 🗞️via Bloomberg Green Recent reporting from Bloomberg Green echoes SFC’s findings: current crop insurance options fall short in supporting sustainable farmers, slowing the shift to #RegenerativeAgriculture. Improving crop insurance for small farmers is an SFC #PolicyPriority because: Whole Farm Revenue Protection, one of the few options for diverse small farms, requires 3-5 YEARS of detailed profit and loss records. Many policies penalize sustainable practices by denying coverage if those methods reduce yield, pushing farmers towards chemical fertilizers and pesticides instead of organic methods. At this year’s SFFFS Conference, SFC Farm Viability Director Amy Gallo led a session on our Texas Case Study, offering insights to support small farmers navigate the crop insurance maze. Big news for Austin’s food future! We’re one step closer to adopting the Austin/Travis County Food Plan! Last week, the Austin Environmental Commission officially recommended that Austin City Council adopt and fund the Austin/Travis County Food Plan. We need a food plan to improve the sustainability and accessibility of the local food system. About 1.24 MILLION pounds of food is wasted every day in Austin, while 14% of our neighbors experience food insecurity. Edwin Marty , Food Policy Manager for City of Austin Office of Sustainability, explained how the high cost of living forces people to sacrifice on food quality in an interview at the SFC office. Austin City Council is expected to vote on adopting the food plan at the Aug. 29 City Council meeting. Sign up to speak in support of the Austin / Travis County Food Plan at austintexas.gov in coming weeks. #Austin #AustinTexas #TravisCounty #BetterFoodFuture #SustainableFood #FoodAccess #AustinCommunity

It was another year of growing knowledge 🌱 and connections 🤝 at the Southern Family Farmer & Food Systems (SFFFS) Conference! A highlight of the conference for our team was the Farmer Listening Session we co-hosted with FARFA. This year’s session helped us better understand how to advocate for small producers at the upcoming Texas Legislative Session about issues ranging from resource conservation to on-site labor. Thanks to conference presenters Small Producers Initiative, FARFA, and COUNCIL FOR HEALTHY FOOD SYSTEMS for your leadership. Until next year! #SouthernFamilyFarmersAndFoodSystems #SmallProducerInitiative #SPI #FarmAndRanchFreedomAlliance #FARFA #FoodSystem #TexasFood #TexasAg #TexasAgricultureMatters #SmallFarm #FamilyFarm
