Walk the talk and learn ! A bit less than 2 years ago, when the Renault Trucks Electric tractor was still under development, Renault Trucks decided to launch a project to electrify its road logistics with a simple target: 100% electric in 2030 ! The reasoning is simple: Renault Trucks is aiming to be the Decarbonization partner of its customers. We then need to be a role model and apply to ourserlves the recepies we are deploying with our customers! As project leader, I feel thrilled today to see our first electric flow in operation ! Indeed, since June, five brand new Renault Trucks E-Tech electric tractors perform every day 2 rotations each between our axle plant of Saint Priest and our Truck assembly plant of Bourg-en-Bresse. This represents 370 of CO2 saved per year ! This first flow was critical because it is a Just-in-time operation (failing is not an option) and it requires to combine an already tight schedule (driver time) with an intermediate charging operation (200 kWh). For this flow, we have worked in partnership with 2 great pionneer transporters: #dupessey and FABIEN CHAZOT and a really great partner #mobilize As it was the first flow, it was also a great team work internally. Many people have contributed to make it possible but Daniel Cogoluenhes, Mathieu Grenier, Thierry Ponthus, Emma Bernander, and Anders Gustafsson have really been of outstanding support to overcome all the little traps that we faced. We have always known our future will follow a few routes, not just new build but re powers. Our history has been made through developing brand new chassis platforms - using widely used major manufacturers platforms, all of our platforms are tested and approved, homologated for use on the roads. The exciting part of all of this hard work is knowing that our market is not just limited to the supply of brand new chassis, but thousands of the same vehicles already in use on the roads. We have historically been hindered by our facility until now…. We can now offer not only tried and tested electrification powertrains, not restricted by body type nor power required - but also offer this with a turnaround time in a number of weeks and all done with our approvals that extend further than just homologation but also sign off for the Saftey systems. What’s more is we also can plate the vehicles at an uprated GVW the same as our new platforms. Need convincing? - I can without doubt guarantee we have more experience of multiple platforms under our belt, this is backed with over 5 years of data to prove this, fleets of vehicles operating in multiple operations from standard RCV’s to fridges, the first fully electric fleet of foodwaste vehicles and now the first side loading vehicles. Renault Trucks receives homologation approval for retrofitted e-truck Renault Trucks has received the first road homologation approval for a truck retrofitted with an electric drivetrain. The transformation of the truck from internal combustion power to an electric drive was finished at the end of 2023. After completion of the mechanical conversion, a team at Renault Trucks conducted a series of tests at UTAC, a technical body based in Paris accredited to ISO 17025. These included assessment of electromagnetic compatibility in line with the R100 standard, together with checks of the braking system. Following these tests, a report of all work was submitted to the environmental agency Auvergne Rhone-Alpes DREAL. With approval granted, the 12-tonne truck will be leased to Extime, operator of the Paris Airport duty-free stores. It will be used for shuttle journeys from company warehouses to the airport. The truck has a maximum approximate range of 250 km. “The use of this vehicle in real operational conditions will enable us validate the economic viability and robustness of the electric retrofit solution,” explained Laurent Colpier, vice president of Used Trucks and Urban Logistics at Renault Trucks. “This pilot project exemplifies our dedication to preserving natural resources while minimizing the environmental impact of vehicle usage. The truck perfectly embodies the circular economy approach that we champion at Renault Trucks.” This first retrofitted truck will serve as a ‘laboratory’ for the truck OEM, allowing it to evaluate the efficiency and productivity of the solution before scaling up the process. The cost of retrofitting an existing vehicle with an electric drivetrain is said to be about 15% less than the purchase of a new electric vehicle. More driverless trucks coming- this time medium duty trucks. Isuzu Motors Limited and Gatik have taken a major step towards scaling up operations for North American deployment of autonomous “Freight-Only” transport. The partnership will make medium duty trucks running middle mile freight. The companies will design and develop a new truck chassis that ensures safety when equipped with an autonomous driving system. This autonomy-ready platform is set to begin rolling off the assembly line of a dedicated Isuzu factory in 2027.
