The foothills of El Yunque take center stage in the opening scene of Bad Bunny’s recent short film—a masterpiece in many respects, whether or not you agree with the commentary. What I can confirm, however, is that the communities surrounding El Yunque are gradually changing, much of it driven by speculative tourism investment. This is not some empty rhetoric, I’ve seen it with my own eyes.
The film’s narrative paints a troubling future, where the cultural and social fabric of these communities risks being unraveled. The monetization of culture—such as traditional foods reimagined for trendy outsider preferences—can lead to the erosion of authenticity. A prime example? A beloved quesito without cheese.
This is an invisible burden, rarely addressed or quantified. When tourism grows unchecked under the guise of “more is better,” it invites exploitation. And before long, we lose the very charm and authenticity of Puerto Rico’s rural communities that drew people in the first place.
When people ask me what keeps me up at night, it’s this: unplanned development around El Yunque. This is why we’re collaborating with municipalities and local government (at their request), offering technical assistance and integrated reports grounded in systems thinking. Our goal? To protect Puerto Rico’s most vital natural treasure, El Yunque, while safeguarding its cultural heritage and authentic spirit.
I hope Bad Bunny is wrong. Our work continues.
El Yunque holds more than just natural treasures — it embodies centuries of stories, traditions, and the spirit of our communities. As speculative tourism investment around El Yunque grows, so does the risk of losing the very essence of Puerto Rican culture that makes this region so special. This is why cultural programming at visitor centers like El Portal de El Yunque is not a luxury — it’s a necessity.
At Fundación Amigos de El Yunque, Inc we’ve worked tirelessly to co-manage cultural initiatives that connect visitors to the living traditions of Puerto Rico. Programs like “Honoring Our Roots” and the Artesanos (Artisans) workshops showcase local artisans, storytelling, music, and crafts that keep these cultural practices alive.
Our Artesanos Program brings artisans to El Portal to share on a weekly basis their crafts, stories, and techniques with the public. Their demonstrative classes and workshops are more than a "tourist experience" — they are bridges between generations, protecting cultural heritage while supporting the local economy.
When cultural authenticity is lost, we risk the same future that Bad Bunny warns of in his latest short film: a future where the soul of a place is diluted in the name of progress.
Tourism must be regenerative, intentional and responsible. It must safeguard both natural resources and cultural heritage.
We're proud to have hosted and supported:
- 11 artisan workshops that taught traditional practices like leather crafting, seed jewelry, and creative writing, emphasizing the role of artisans as cultural stewards.
- Showcased 14 cultural music events featuring 69 musicians, providing a platform for Puerto Rican and Caribbean musical traditions, including bomba and plena, salsa... These events celebrated the rich diversity of Caribbean music, strengthening cultural pride among residents and visitors while fostering a sense of unity through shared musical experiences. This amazing musicians called El Portal their stage this year:
- Oferenda
- Chuwi
- Bomba Pal’ Pueblo
- Sabora Rumba
- Cambio En Clave – Rafa Cancel
- Luquillo Dancers
- Bombae'
- The Supacrew
- Maricucha y Su Combo
- La Mio
- Joe Louis
- Bass Lab Six
- Maracatu Caribe
- La Necedad
- Nido de Águila
In addition to its direct community impact, the program was nominated for Best Music Tourism Initiative by Music Cities Events, a recognition that highlights its role in promoting Puerto Rican culture as a driving force for economic development .
This work is hard, but culture matters. The heart of El Yunque lies not only in its trees and waterfalls but in its people, its stories, and its traditions.
Let’s honor them. Let’s protect them.

I’m not sure what connects with me more: the story, the music, the violins, or how images, without saying a word, can take us to places where we start to dream. 🎶🌟
Just finished a 1:1 session with an incredible young woman, a junior, who's beginning her journey of self-discovery and building her life project. ✨💡 And here's the thing: talking about building a life without a dream feels impossible.
To design a personal path that truly inspires you, you first have to discover what makes you unique, recognize your strengths, and embrace what sets you apart. 💪🌱
Sometimes, the first step in this process is the simplest but most powerful: daring to dream without limits. 🚀 what dream is driving you? 🌟
