I won the lottery this week. I LITERALLY couldn’t believe it. Once the initial shock wore off, it got me thinking. Winning the lottery and your kid succeeding in school might seem unrelated, but there's a parallel here. Just like winning the lottery, your kid's success in school can seem like the luck of the draw. Do they get a good teacher? Do they have good friends? Are they motivated? Do they like their subjects? All of these things, that neither you nor your kid can control, can make grades seem like a toss up. Teens will try and hope they do well, but ultimately there’s this ‘lottery mindset’ - it could go either way. Of course, with the actual lottery, your chances of winning are slim to none. But in school, EVERY student has the ability to succeed. And it's very much in their control. Your kid *can* get good grades, consistently and predictably. It's not about luck. It's about developing the right skills and strategies - time management, critical thinking, note taking - and consistently applying them. It's not about how good they are at subjects, it's about how good they are at *applying their skills* to their subjects. It's about helping them take control of their academic career and learn how to learn effectively. As the kids settle into a new school year, it’s a great time to think about the lessons that they learn at home, as well. Your kids see you buying things, but does your preschooler understand where money comes from—and the different ways it’s used or saved? Does your 10-year-old know how to compare prices on that toy he’s saving for? Does your teenager have a savings account to earn interest on earnings from part-time work—and upcoming graduation gifts? This week, in 3 out of my 4 high school classes, students are discussing additional and unique ways to bring in money in their spare time (I say spare because sooo many of my students are involved with more than just classes!) I also learned during this prompt that referring to earning more money as a “side hustle” was “uncool and gross”. 🥴 leave it to high schoolers 🤣🤷🏻♀️🙈.
