A common misconception is that gaming is a 501(c)(3) “charitable” activity. There is nothing inherently charitable about gaming (e.g., lotteries, raffles, casino-type activities). According to the IRS, it's a recreational activity and a business with possible UBTI implications. Although a charity may use the proceeds from gaming to pay expenses associated with its charitable programs, gaming itself does not further any charitable purpose. So gaming cannot be a more than an insubstantial purpose of a 501(c)(3) organization. NOTE: Many states and localities (like Chicago) regulate certain types of gaming activities conducted by nonprofit corporations. Be sure to check these laws in advance of hosting a fundraising event.

I NEED YOUR HELP (please) It’s been a super busy day and week, so I’m a little late with Bishop and this week’s shoutout/update for our CHOC Walk fundraiser and Chalk for CHOC. Things have definitely slowed way down, with just a single donation since last week (big shoutout to Serious Point Games) and now 6 days in a row without a single donation. We have raised $1000 so far in June, which is awesome, but still puts us well behind the $6785 goal. So far this year, I have done everything I did in previous years of fundraising and more, but the total number of donors is down significantly (we’re at about 1/3 of what it has been in the past). If you have any advice for better ways to solicit donations, please share. I feel like I’m hustling every day, but have a lot less to show for it, so I need to change my strategy. You can help now in any or all of the following ways, if you are so inclined: 1. Ideas for better fundraising would be awesome! 2. Boosting the signal by interacting with or resharing any of my CHOC Walk posts can help to get the word out (reach has been a struggle this year across all platforms). 3. Of course, donations make a huge difference! Anything you can do would be amazing. The goal is ambitious, but we’ve done it before, and I believe we can do it again! https://lnkd.in/gSyiH7t Thank you for being amazing!

After I was laid off form Consulting. I took this time to pursue my passion project. I started a non-profit called Wargaming for a Cause where we host an annual charity event through tabletop war games. Our inaugural tournament event is being held on June 15-16th 2024 at The Epic in Grand Prairie playing Games Workshop, Warhammer 40K. Hoping to get 60 players this year and looking to raise more than $5,000 dollars for Extra Life at Cook's Children Hospital in Fort Worth. In the three months since I've been laid off, This was what we were able to accomplish; 1. Idea to reality 2. Navigate the federal and state bureaucracy to start a non-profit. Without using my personal address! 3. Navigate the challenges of finding and choosing a bank that suits us. 4. Find suitable people to fill our board of directors that knew the hobby and shared a similar passion. 5. Reach out to local, national, and international businesses to ask for support in the event and spreading awareness of what we were doing 6. Reach out to other non-profits to spread awareness and hopefully spark a future partnership 7. Reach out to our charity of choice and coordinate efforts 8. Reach out to players for awareness of the tournament 9. Contact individuals with streaming capabilities and knowledge to livestream the event and raise money through online donations 10. Plan the event and activities from start to finish 11. Source, navigate, and experience firsthand the world of offshore manufacturing, international trade, and maritime shipping. 12. Source multiple products for testing and use during the tournament. 13. Create a website with the help of a web designer! Doing all this is NOT cheap. I think I poured over $4,000 of my own personal funds for various professional help, materials, manufacturing, shipping, etc. but its an investment towards a recurring noble goal towards charity! I'm sharing this in the hopes that my LinkedIn network will consider helping me and my team with our goal of raising money in the name of gaming and children! I hope this story inspires you to don't be afraid to take that first step into the unknown. My favorite quote; "I have loved the stars too fondly to be afraid of the dark." Don't be afraid of the dark, because in the darkest night is where you'll be able see the faintest of stars.
