Skills England to transform opportunities and drive growth in the UK. New body launched this week by Keir Starmer and team to bring together key partners to meet the skills needs of the next decade across all regions in the UK. Skills are crucial to economic growth, with a third of productivity improvement over the last two decades explained by improvements to skills levels. But between 2017 and 2022 skills shortages in the UK doubled to more than half a million, and now account for 36% of job vacancies. Skills England will bring together central and local government, businesses, training providers and unions to meet the skills needs of the next decade across all regions, providing strategic oversight of the post-16 skills system aligned to the government’s Industrial Strategy. Government has “once in a generation” opportunity to fix skills, productivity and growth, says new City & Guilds and Lifelong Education Institute report (The Path to Solving the Productivity Crisis). The Prime Minister and Education Secretary have today formally announced the launch of Skills England, a new body aiming to unify the skills landscape and enhance the nation's skills. Skills England will oversee the allocation of the growth and skills levy, providing businesses flexibility to invest in the training they really need. Over the next 9-12 months, Skills England will establish a responsive and collaborative skills system, ensuring training aligns with identified needs. Creating jobs is one thing but being able to fill the roles with the right people with the right skills at the right time is a whole other level. Having a system that considers this end to end is critical. Good to see progress but we know success will take time and only accelerated by a strong skills pipeline being developed that involves effort that is not constantly redirected.

And so the transition (away from IfATE) to a new 'Skills England' body begins; with a key role in providing and managing the list of 'Growth and Skills Levy' funded courses. https://lnkd.in/eqmiDcBS Construction is a key sector: the reliance on UK workers needs to grow; but what are the future skills that this sector needs?
