Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare by improving outcomes, efficiency, and access to care. However, AI also poses challenges such as data quality, ethics, and skills gaps. This article, based on a joint report by EIT Health and McKinsey & Company, explores how AI affects the healthcare workforce and organizations, and what needs to change to scale up AI in healthcare. The key points from my perspective from this article are: - AI can augment patient care by automating routine tasks, enhancing diagnostics, supporting decision making, and enabling remote monitoring and self-care. - AI can also improve healthcare operations by optimizing scheduling, bed management, and population health management, and accelerate healthcare innovation by speeding up drug discovery and clinical trials. - AI will change the nature and demand of healthcare work, requiring new skills, roles, and education for healthcare professionals, as well as new ways of collaborating and leading. - AI will require robust data infrastructure, governance, and security, as well as user-centric design, clinical evidence, and regulatory clarity to ensure quality, safety, and trust. - AI will benefit from cross-sector partnerships, innovation clusters, and centers of excellence to leverage data, resources, and expertise at scale. I agree that AI can bring significant benefits to healthcare, but also that it requires careful and responsible implementation, with the involvement of all stakeholders, especially healthcare practitioners and patients. I also believe that AI is not a threat to healthcare professionals, but rather a tool that can enhance their capabilities and satisfaction, as well as improve patient care and quality of life. Hoping that this article can inspire more dialogue and collaboration among healthcare leaders, innovators, and policymakers, to harness the power of AI for healthcare transformation.
