Formula 1 teams have a crystal clear goal: To win races and championships Everyone is aligned only on that goal. After each race, everyone knows if they are moving in the right direction They reflect after each race and make hundreds of changes and run experiments between the end of one race and the start of the next one. Everybody is focused on improving whatever they do, to meet the overall goal. It doesn't matter what your role is: o Team Principle o Driver o Technical Director o Chief Engineer o Race Engineers o Car Engineers o Pit crew o Designers o Support staff o Admin staff o Human resources o Performance Engineer o Aerodynamicist o Mechanics o Data Anlaysts o Marketing and PR team o Finance Everyone knows how their daily work contributes to the overall success of the organization and the goal of the organization. And they all win when the driver wins. Look at how the whole team celebrates Lewis Hamilton's win. There are about 50 to 100 people in the paddock at the time of the race, and maybe another 1000 in the factory, watching every race, suggesting changes, celebrating wins, and reflecting on losses There is a reason why F1 teams are high-performing organizations. And why every organization is mediocre to poor-performing teams of teams In F1, everyone focuses on the same goals, and improves what they do to achieve that goal In organizations, everyone has their objectives. And they do everything to meet those objectives even if it is at the cost of the overall goal. That is the power of customer value streams. They are an outside-in alignment to the core artery of the flow of value to the customer and for the organization. I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the Corvette Academy, where I learned a ton about Corvettes, Chevy, and GM (and even got to drive some amazing cars!). But the most valuable lesson I took away didn’t come from the cars themselves—it came from a conversation with Raul, one of the product trainers. During my first training session, Raul asked a simple but powerful question: When was the last time you held a photo? It made me realize how rare and special that experience has become. He explained how sending a photo of the customer with their new vehicle can turn a simple delivery into a lasting memory. Inspired by this idea, I’m excited to start incorporating it into my process by sending a personalized thank-you card along with a photo after every delivery. It's a small gesture, but one that can make a big difference in creating a memorable experience for my customers. 🏎️ If Formula One teams were operated like D&A teams.... We'd see the mechanics or engineers driving the car! 🛠️ Building a car that can compete and driving the car are 2 different things that require 2 very different skillsets Both are equally important because without having built a car that's fit to compete, there's no winning But, we wouldn't put the Mechanic or Engineer behind the wheel of the Ferrari and expect them to win the Grand Prix Do F1 drivers know more about the technicalities of an F1 car than your 'Average Joe'? Of course, they do! 👉🏻Could they build it themselves? Nope! 👉🏻Do they need to? Nope! 👉🏻Are they expected to? Nope! Yet, D&A teams are constructed by organisations where they expect the people who can build the vehicle also to drive (lead) it And they are 2 different jobs/skillsets Implementing the technology and building the infrastructure is critical - success cannot happen without it But doing that on its own doesn't drive value creation You need someone who knows how to drive it, to drive it, if you want to win We have to change the perception of what D&A is and exists to do! #data #analytics #perception
