We WRAP are proud to have worked with the Welsh Government Huw Irranca-Davies Rhodri Asby Andy Rees PhD, OBE to help make this happen - supporting local authorities, backing circular businesses, engaging the public with our Be Mighty campaigns. It just shows what can be achieved when Govt, businesses and the public all pull behind an inspiring vision. For this #Mondayhype, I want to send a "thank you" to Mariia Liubarskaia, Solid Waste Division Chief, and her team at Calvert County Government for hosting The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA)'s Mid-Atlantic Chapter and providing a tour of their #Recycling Center located at the Appeal #Landfill last week. This center tops the charts on several levels: it offers robust #disposal and recycling options, it is incredibly well #organized and #maintained, and any observer can tell that resident #accessibility and #convenience were at the top of the designers' minds when laying out the #facility. When resident drop-off is the primary way that waste disposal and recycling collection are managed in an area, the drop-off or convenience centers should make it as easy and appealing as possible. Besides, visiting the drop-off center may be a weekly, if not daily, trip for many residents; they can experience their government's investment in their quality of life through these often-overlooked public infrastructure sites. My favorite quote from the tour was said by a supervisor with the department when he said, "We accept trash but that doesn't mean we have to look like it," which is the truth. I have visited dozens of convenience centers as a #solidwastemanagement consultant, and this one is a must-see if you intend to revamp the ones in your community. The County is even commissioning a #mural to aid in the waste facility's beautification. Among other best management practices, these can be put into practice elsewhere. If you ever find yourself in #SouthernMaryland, make a point to stop and visit the center. On that summery fall afternoon last week, a photographer with Calvert County's Communication office took a nice photo of our tour group. It was great to see again or meet my fellow industry colleagues in the area, including Mark Gutberlet, Michelle G. Minstrell, Dana Blumberg, Don Birnesser, P.E., and David Traub, among others.

This is one of the best laid out explainers for the missteps the Cherelle Parker administration has made on "cleaning and greening" and what we can do to correct. Some gems in the article include: 💎 Break up the City's waste and recycling contract to make space for more solutions, especially from the local companies like Remark Glass, Rabbit Recycling, Burns Recycling Allen Burns and many others. 💎 Create policies and legislation to reduce single use plastics by banning certain materials and placing fees on others (Circular Philadelphia has a whole policy on this). 💎 Create real education and community engagement campaigns around waste reduction as opposed to blowing $360k on campaign ads on Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). The sign of a true leader is to humbly accept criticism, pragmatically course correct, and truly commit to serving the people they were elected to represent. Wales has been named the second best country in the world for recycling and is within touching distance of the top spot, new analysis shows. Wales is listed just behind Austria in the global rankings, with both countries managing to recycle 59% of their waste. Northern Ireland is ranked ninth, England 11th and Scotland 15th among the 48 countries included in the comparison. Wales has put a particular focus on improving recycling rates in recent decades - with statutory targets for local councils and all homes asked to separate out their food waste among a number of initiatives. Some councils have moved to only picking up general waste at the kerbside once a month, with Denbighshire being the latest - introducing four weekly collections for black bags in June. The Welsh government puts the average recycling rate in Wales at 66%, external - this is based on municipal waste collected by local authorities from households and some businesses. It varies from 59% in Torfaen to 72% in Pembrokeshire and Swansea. To compile a global league table, researchers used a country's reported recycling rate and other waste data to try and rank different nations' efforts on a like-for-like basis. The report, by Eunomia Research and Consulting and Reloop, examined the performance of 48 countries, including the world's largest economies.
