Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA)’s Post

EPR legislation has been ramping up. In the past few years, more and more bills have been introduced, proposing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging, batteries, paint, mattresses, and more. It's important that the waste and resource recovery sector have a seat at the table to help determine the direction of these policies. SWANA Director of Public Policy, Kristyn Oldendorf, attended a roundtable discussion hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce on EPR, joining businesses and associations from across the value chain. Participants agreed with the need to have all stakeholders involved in determining EPR policies. The group discussed the potential for EPR to enable safer working conditions, a priority for SWANA, especially with respect to lithium-ion batteries and other materials. SWANA members play an essential role in enabling recycling and recovery of materials, with the infrastructure, expertise and knowledge to strengthen recycling systems. SWANA will continue to represent the needs of members in these conversations. #SWANASafety #ClimateChampions
