https://lnkd.in/eCRp_4iT I remember when I was 16 in the winter of 2011, it was the first time I not only noticed but participated in the so-called Oscars season - when studios would intentionally release their films to a wide audience in January or February, MONTHS after showing their film in L.A. County to qualify for the Oscars, so that mid-budget dramas like The King's Speech, Black Swan and True Grit would still be running in cinemas by the time the Oscars would announce their Best Picture shortlist (which is simply good for business if these films are still in the public awareness)! 🙂💡🎞 💰 Because outside of those months, my nearest multiplex would seem to offer only one of three things: horror, adult/teen comedy or the summer blockbuster! 🔪🤣☀️ I used to think that the moment the major Hollywood studios began to shift away from mid-budget dramas ALL YEAR ROUND to blockbuster franchises planned out YEARS in advance was the success of Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone and LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring! 🔮 And it REALLY accelerated after the 2008 crash, because studios from that point on didn't want to take risks anymore, and instead pour money into fewer films with bigger budgets designed for a GLOBAL audience (which the MCU would set the standard)! 📉💰💥 #filmindustry #blockbusters #audiencetargeting

As a slow year for film and television production comes to a close, Georgia’s largest film industry trade association has elected a new set of leaders. Brennen Dicker, executive director of the Georgia State University Creative Media Industries Institute, has been named the new chair of the Georgia Screen Entertainment Coalition with Michael Clark, the general manager at Eagle Rock Studios Atlanta, to serve as vice chair. GSEC has a big challenge to navigate this year: the total recalibration of the film and television industry. Production is down from a peak that drove a significant boom in studio construction in Georgia over the past five years, leaving many owners and operators with empty soundstages. It's too soon to write off the Hollywood summer box office - 'Inside Out 2' and 'Deadpool 3' are examples of two heavyweights on the horizon that could guide the season to some semblance of respectability - and besides the misses, there will be breakouts. 2024 was always going to be a "down year" due to the strikes, but we'll need more than a handful of tentpoles to entice audiences back and revive cinema-going momentum. That is crucial. So come on, cinema owners, take a punt and give more screens to great indie films and even more live events. Embrace dynamic pricing. Clean up your cinemas. Clean. Up. Your. Cinemas. Motivate staff to take pride in their jobs and become film-going advocates. This is your business to lose
Will the North American box office recover in 2024?
