Today it was a pleasure to see the launch of the initial phase of An Garda Síochána’s latest road safety initiative. As Chief Superintendent in Charge of the Dublin Metropolitan Regional (DMR), Roads Policing Unit I am particularly conscious of fatal and serious injury traffic accidents on our roads. So far this year 19 people tragically lost their lives across Dublin County including 7 pedestrians, 6 cyclists, 3 motorcyclists and 3 motorists. I developed this campaign to reach a national audience with the aim of informing, educating and reminding our most vulnerable road users, of best practice in keeping themselves and other road users safe. The campaign will delivered through Garda social media platforms and will comprise of three two minute video messages delivered by Sgt Gavin Coleman advising pedestrians, pedals cyclists and e scooter users of best practice in road safety. Each video will be supplemented with a link to the Garda website where further information will be available. This an initial launch of the campaign which will be further developed and launched in the first quarter of 2025. The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has launched its state-wide road safety operation to reduce road fatalities this Christmas 🙌 Operation Mistletoe will see an increased number of police patrolling Queensland roads over the next five weeks, with more than 100 police motorbikes out in force targeting dangerous drivers. The Commissioner of Police, Steve Gollschewski APM, and more than 30 police officers and their motorcycles descended on King George Square to launch the operation 🏍️ Commissioner Gollschewski said that Queensland is on track to have more than 300 lives lost on our roads this year, which is the highest number of deaths in nearly two decades. Police shooting - Balzan DNA on gun The events leading up to the terrible loss of Brad Balzan’s life in 2020, are the subject of an ongoing coronial inquest. The process of giving expert evidence at an inquest is rather different to a criminal court. In this matter, I was engaged by the Crown Solicitors Office which conducts itself more as a finder of fact. There was expert evidence provided by NSW FASS, which I reviewed, and we gave concurrent oral evidence to the inquest. Concurrent evidence is a useful process which can be a more productive method of getting to the facts themselves. It is interesting that court processes in Australia involving complex scientific evidence never proceed with the benefit of a scientific advisor/member on the bench. The DNA evidence before the inquest considered; -      2 x Glock service pistols -      Pistol grip -      Pistol slide -      Pistol trigger -      Safety mechanism -      Shovel – Various areas -      Pistol holster In this case there was no body worn video footage for consideration of the event itself. The police shooting has drawn significant attention regarding stop and search methods, and proactive policing. It is difficult to fathom how devasted Mr Balzan’s family must be.
