Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Pride in Place event, organised by Huntingdonshire District Council. I was particularly curious to join because, having promoted local territories in Italy, I wanted to understand how a similar effort is approached here in the UK. Promoting a territory is no easy task; the challenges are numerous and complex. The order of the points does not matter; each point is equally important. The first key element is the ability to bring together different voices and make them sing in harmony, much like a choir (a phrase coined by Michelle Sacks, which fits perfectly). The second aspect involves attracting tourists who truly want to experience the area, rather than those who just "mordi e fuggi" ("bite and escape" letteral translation - an Italian expression referring to tourists who come, consume, and leave without contributing to the local economy). One solution could be to establish a consistent calendar of events that engage the local community and spark interest among visitors, repeated annually (important) to create a regular rendezvous. When effectively engaged, visitors become active participants, sharing the experience. This is what we achieved with the Amici del Po association over the past ten years, promoting the culture of the Po River through the event “Galleggia, non galleggia” ("Floats, or doesn’t float"), a fun occasion that has attracted groups of friends, families, and corporate teams. In the first year, only 8-10 local teams participated; this year, as in recent years, registrations closed a month early due to the participation of over 100 teams, including some from abroad. The event has brought significant media visibility to the area. The success of this single event has generated spin-off activities, thanks to the synergy between volunteers, businesses, agriculture, and local artisans. This has broadened the offering and created a network with museums, exhibitions, conferences, and hospitality services. The third key element is the unique identity of the territory, expressed through its culture, art, and the revival of traditional craftsmanship, all in harmony with nature. The aim is to experience the territory authentically and respectfully, without disturbing the delicate balance of nature. A provocative idea could be to create a “Palaeolithic Hotel”, offering an immersive and authentic experience using natural reclaimed materials. In essence, promoting a territory successfully is about more than just good organisation; it’s about creating meaningful connections and shared experiences that leave a lasting impression. Perhaps it’s time to start thinking outside the box, or in this case, outside the modern hotel room. Who’s ready to book a stay at the “Palaeolithic Hotel”? 😄 English is not my first language, please excuse any mistakes, thank you.
Huntingdonshire District Council Pride in Place - what can I say? #BeMoreChoir I am not going to tell you about every absolutely brilliant speaker, nor am I going to tell you how simply #inspiring the discussions were, the examples of great practice, the #passion #energy in the room, or the link to #UKREiiF. No, instead I am going to share one of my many clichés about the strength and power of #collaboration in #placemaking Every single person in that room today, was a wonderful soloist. But sometimes in a crowded world, a soloist may sing beautifully but that beauty may be lost in the wider noise, drowned out, lost. Instead, let's all become a choir. Let's come together, bringing our unique and varied voices, to create a choir, whose collective voice soars above that noise, creating impact and attracting attention in the most positive way possible, creating beauty with breadth and depth. Mike Gildersleeves said the ripple effect of a stone in a pond today, might take several years to come to fruition. But whilst we collectively sing as a choir, we continue to cement our relationships, build momentum and create the spark and energy in creating brilliant places for our communities. I can't thank our amazing speakers and the team that made the event happen, enough, you were awesome 👏 👏👏 Instead, I am tagging you as a call to action, to share a thought, a reflection, a takeaway on #collaboration in #placemaking from today. Let's create the #impact #Huntingdonshire demands!! Understanding hope in a philosophical light compels us to reflect on our roles within this dynamic. As global citizens, how do we respond to the hope of others in distress? Do our actions contribute to the fulfillment or the frustration of this hope? Such reflection will determine the way we answer these questions and shapes not just policies and responses to crises (refugee crisis and others) but the very fabric of our shared humanity. Hope, then, is not merely a survival and health strategy; it is a profound testament to the resilience and indefatigable spirit of those who dare to dream of a better tomorrow amidst the rubble of their pasts. It challenges each of us to respond with compassion and justice, ensuring that hope is not a cruel irony but a prelude to a new beginning.
