I'm travelling to Bremen next week to attend Space Tech Expo Europe with Fife College. I'm going as part of the excellent InvestinFife delegation. I'm often asked - Why is Fife College going to Europe's largest space tech conference with over 700 exhibitors and over 8,000 delegates? The answer is simple - there is a growing shortage of capable, young STEM based talent to join the geo/space workforce. It is not just Space data-related - it is all matters geo, location, sustainability, conservation, fintech, renewable energy and recreational mental welfare - all have geolocation NOT at it's periphery - but at it's core. In recent times the Gap is turning into a Chasm - the Demand is exceeding Supply for the entry level jobs to enable delivery of tens of thousands of projects globally. We need increasing VOLUME of these willing trainees. It is long known that the established University-based courses are simply not producing the numbers of graduates with appropriate expectations. Some of the very best practitioners in geo I have worked with over my career have no Uni background - coders/trainers/PMs/surveyors/cartographer/ex military - the list goes on and on and hello to you all :-) I won't even start on the new disciplines added to the already wide geo mix - AI, ML, MRV methods, regulations and international global collaborations to hit NZ targets. Fife College has recognised the need and we are building a strategy to provide a foundational skills accelerator in geo/space for a company then to kick on and further train the new employee. I can guarantee that the graduate will know and appreciate the basics of data analytics, accuracy, location, error, data sourcing, reporting and being a team member in a department. A combo of the tech and soft skills needed in working life. Oh - did I mention they will be coached on presentation skills, schedule discipline and timeliness? I know we have no problem in working with companies and the public sector who have a need and willing to consider the graduates. We just need, as an industry, to be better at promoting ourselves to the youth, employment centres, school teachers and parents that space and geo is actually not just important but now in the mainstream of modern society. We still have a perception of being geeky, not great at explaining our jobs and our impact on modern day life and proud of our personal Uni past credentials. In Sales talk - we all need to assist in feeding the sales funnel at the top with fresh, young talent - and lots of them! If we don't crack this and increase the volume of college-educated graduates with a positive work ethic attitude - then all the decades long plans by Govts/NGOs/Finance and NetZero policies is under severe jeopardy.
