As we celebrate the retirement of Captain Jeff Skiles, it’s only fitting to reflect on his remarkable career and the invaluable role he played as a Second in Command. In January 2009, he served as First Officer alongside Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger on US Airways Flight 1549—better known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” If you’ve ever heard Jeff speak or read his interviews, you know he’s a humble professional who credits that day’s success to thorough training and the decisive leadership of his Captain. But this raises an important question: how do leaders like Skiles and Sullenberger emerge? Are they born leaders, or are they shaped by systems and environments that prepare them for excellence? If your organization is struggling to cultivate the next generation of leaders, it might be time to reexamine your leadership development strategy. Discover how we can help: https://lnkd.in/eUG3ufaz

Happy Birthday, Jeff! I can't believe that it's your retirement! Maybe now you will have more time to do the recreational mountain flying that you love. The important work that you have done on Capitol Hill has made aviation much safer, and everyone who flies owes you a debt of gratitude. As I have told you many times, I could not have had a better colleague that bitterly cold winter day on Flight 1549 or during all that came after it. And through it all, your wry sense of humor always helped lighten even the darkest times. I wish you fair skies and following winds as you explore your next chapter, and hope that Barb is ready to have you home a lot more. Your friend for life, Sully

The US passed a law mandating Airlines to refund tickets in the event of cancellations, delays and lost baggages. These new risks for the Airlines are a huge opportunity for Insurance firms. I envision an insurance product sold to Airlines to cover the refunds in these events. This would help spread the risk between airlines and make the costs more predictable for the airline (regular premiums). The premiums will most likely be a percentage of tickets fares. Although costs would certainly vary by carrier, airport, season, time, airplane, etc, I imagine these would be computed and then averaged out to charge a flat rate on all tickets to a carrier, based on their historic flight data. Would airlines simply build this into the ticket price? Most certainly. But, I venture people would mind the price hike far less than the absolute relief of getting a hassle free refund when things go south. All in all, it’s a very interesting application of Society of Actuaries ‘ motto: Risk is Opportunity.
Rare win for the DOT
