As I reflect on my initial journey as a sales engineer, one project from 2000 stands out vividly. Three years into my role, I had started gaining momentum, with some wins and some losses under my belt. I had been allocated an independent territory to handle, and was then working on a paper mill project in Odisha, still reeling from the devastating cyclone of 1999. The mill was installing a captive power plant and needed a compressed air system. The EPC contractor, responsible for designing, procuring, and constructing the project, was based in South India . Our Chennai office handled initial preparations, submitting offers and budgets. However, I knew we would face challenges - the specific compressor that would fit this project, with the required capacity, was then being imported from Europe by us, resulting in it being a lot more expensive due to the prevailing customs duties, which were as high as 25%. Additionally, this client had past concerns with our service quality and performance resilience. For this project, I had built a relationship with the client from the conceptualization stage, visiting six times, but still my outlook was gloomy. Upon arrival in Odisha for the price negotiations with the client, I learnt that for the said negotiations, the EPC contractor had listed all vendors who manufactured or imported compressors during those days, leveling the playing field. With youthful exuberance and experience-driven confidence, I decided to put up a fight. The next day, in a crowded hall with multiple bidders, the client expressed concerns about our expensive offering and past performance. I proposed alternatives, such as utilizing the EPC license to reduce costs, but the client had other plans. The situation seemed bleak, but I told myself that I was not going back without making an honest attempt. Finding customers is key to businesses. I’m a customer and my experience so far with some big names construction supplies in India is to put it mildly quite disappointing. I’ve been chasing big names to get in touch with me to purchase their products or at least talk to me. Most of their websites are non informative or I’ve to Google around to search for contact details. So far the best responses I’ve had are from key players like Tata Steel UltraTech Cement JKCement and similar entities. Of course they have dedicated sales team who chase customers. But others in the industry seem to have decided to let their local distributors handle any customer. If I’m doing a big project I rather talk to source companies and establish relationships and then maybe channel logistics via local suppliers but that’s my call. If you force me to go through local distributors first I am not happy because I’ve got to chase a dozen of them for competitive prices. Such failure to identify a potential customer will not help developing a positive impact for such companies cause now I as a customer would doubt their ability to deliver.  Indian Construction Equipment (CE) industry sales recorded 5% YoY growth; 31% MoM degrowth in April 2024 The April 2024 sales of the Indian CE industry, at 9,990 units, were 5% higher than the 9,544 units sold in April 2023. The YoY increase is a result of positive growth across all five major equipment segments. Of the total unit sales in April 2024, 9.136 units were sold domestically and 854 units exported. Earthmoving Equipment, which accounts for approximately 70% of the total CE sales in India, sold 6,860 units in April 2024 – 2% more than in April 2023, as did Material Handling Equipment at 1,221 unit sales. While sales of Material Processing Equipment remained nearly static, at 221 units, Road Construction Equipment and Concrete Equipment registered YoY increases of 33% and 15%, with April 2024 sales figures of 640 and 1,048 units respectively. On a month-on-month basis, however, there has been degrowth of 31% in April 2024, as compared to 14,562 units sold in March 2024, driven primarily by a 32% drop in sales of Earthmoving Equipment, the segment that comprises the lion’s share of total CE sales in the country.
