Cities need to increase the green and blue areas! We have identified nine key elements of regenerative design🌿

🌍 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 "𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞" 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬🏙️ The race to combat urban sprawl is on, and the European Union is leading the charge with its ambitious Zero Net Land Take by 2050 goal. But how can cities grow sustainably without consuming new land? The answer lies in urban regeneration—a powerful tool to reuse and renew existing urban areas. 🔍 This research investigates Territorial Governance Law in Tuscany and explore how the classification of urban fabric can identify areas for regeneration that balance development, environmental protection, and climate resilience. Here's a relevant read for our development-minded friends: Published by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this groundbreaking study concludes that building reuse almost always offers environmental savings over demolition and new construction. Savings from building reuse are between 4 and 46 percent over new construction when comparing buildings with the same energy performance level. The findings presented by the National Trust for Historic Preservation are important in supporting the idea that the reuse of historic assets creates more sustainable and environmentally resilient communities. We had a great session on Tuesday, talking about nature and cities with Benjamin Caspar from DG ENV, Susan Mackenzie from Google and Javier Dorao from Crea Madrid Nuevo Norte. 3 key takeaways for me: - The EU Nature Restoration law will be a step change in how cities develop, conserve and benefit from nature. - The social benefits of nature in cities are as important as the environmental benefits. - Public and private sector need to come together to deliver on our green spaces for nature. Cities should put in place Urban Greening Plans which can help to direct and enable the private sector to align their plans and contributions. Urban sustainability is governed beyond the urban scale through trans-local networks and assemblages of actors and institutions. There is an emerging field of interest that aims to understand the outcomes of urban sustainability interventions, both from the environmental and social equity perspectives. Our paper contributes to the literature on governing urban environmental sustainability transitions, with a distinct focus on small and intermediary cities of the global South.
