Right Way To Consume Fruits: The fruit is great for weight loss as it has low calories, high fiber and water content. Fruits are an instant snack provided by nature and a great source of vitamins and other elements that help maintain a healthy diet. Fruits contain vitamins and minerals which the body needs in abundance. According to dietitian Swati Bishnoi, “Many people consume fruits in the wrong way, which if not corrected can cause more harm than benefit.” Let us know what she tells about the mistakes made while eating fruits… Narinder Mohan Hospital and Heart Center in Mohan Nagar Dietician Swati Bishnoi It is said that mostly sugar and fiber are found in fruits. The sugars fructose and pectin found in fruits get fermented in the large intestine. Due to which the movement of stool becomes easier. Fruits contain high amount of water. Therefore one should not drink water after eating fruits. Citrus fruits like orange and strawberry have high water content. One should not drink water after eating watermelon, melon, grapes and cucumber etc. It can cause gastric problems in the body. This may cause stomach ache. Take care of your skin like this in summer, you will not need makeup, your skin will remain glowing. It is best to avoid anything 2-3 hours before going to bed as it disturbs the digestive system. It is not good to consume fruits just before sleeping, because melatonin hormone is released in the body at night. As night time increases, its quantity increases and starts giving the signal of biological night. At night, the melatonin hormone stops the use of glucose in our body, which is called impaired glucose tolerance and when we eat too much at night, that extra glucose comes into our body. Due to which the problems of diabetes, fatty liver and high cholesterol increase. Apart from this, eating fruits late at night can also cause symptoms of acidity. Fruits should be consumed as evening snack, not after that. Tags: fruits, health, Lifestyle FIRST PUBLISHED: <!-- -->May 4, 2024, 18:30 IST

I love to treat myself on Valentines Day, delicious food, a new novel, a long soak in an Epsom salt bath! In fact, if I am totally honest, this is a week long affair for me because there are just so many health promoting ways you can love on your body without chowing down on Hersheys Kisses! Raw cacao, (the real meaning of chocolate!) is like medicine for the frazzled midlife woman sailing the turbulent seas of hormonal change. Let's list the reasons why... Raw Cacao is packed with magnesium, our relaxation mineral. Raw cacao is rich in iron, our energy boosting mineral. Raw cacao boosts serotonin levels in the brain which helps us to feel happier. Raw cacao is a vasodilator and increases blood flow to the heart, brain and pelvic area supporting our cardiovascular, mental and vaginal health. (There is a reason why this 'aphrodisiac food' is attached to Valentines Day!) Raw cacao contains flavonoids which help to lower your blood pressure These flavonoids also support insulin so you manage your blood sugar balance better Antioxidant polyphenols help to reduce inflammation in the body. Initial studies in animals show that the compounds theobromine and theophylline, found in raw cacao reduce constriction of the airways and tissue thickness in asthmatics There is research out there that people who eat dark chocolate regularly find it easier to maintain a healthy BMI even though eating chocolate puts them into the category of people who eat more calories and fat. (Hmmm! if ever there was an argument for dense nutrition in our diets, this is it!) Another study of human dieting to lose weight found that those who ate 42g of dark chocolate daily, lost weight faster than the other dieting group. Let's look at adding MORE raw cacao, dark chocolate and nutrient dense food into our diet every day, not just Valentines Day. You can start here with my simple recipe for Chocolate Avocado Mousse. Its made in the blender and packed with polyphenols, fibre and vitamin E from the avocados. The research on vitamin E for preventing vaginal dryness in menopause is extensive! Can adding 1 gram of turmeric and pepper can help with diabetes? In a fascinating study involving 20 healthy young adults, researchers explored how common kitchen spices—black pepper and turmeric—could impact blood sugar levels after breakfast. Each participant, evenly split between men and women with an average age of 22, consumed four different breakfast variations on separate days. These meals consisted of the same base: toasted bread, an egg, and black tea, but with different additions: 1 gram of black pepper, 1 gram of turmeric, a combination of both, or no added spices at all. The study revealed that the combination of black pepper and turmeric significantly reduced blood sugar levels over a three-hour period after eating, compared to the control meal with no added spices. This suggests that these spices might help in managing post-meal blood sugar spikes, which can be particularly beneficial for those looking to maintain steady energy levels throughout the day or manage conditions like prediabetes. Interestingly, despite these benefits, the participants didn’t experience any noticeable changes in hunger or digestive discomfort across the different meals. This means that adding these spices to your diet might not only help control blood sugar but also do so without making you feel hungrier or causing stomach issues. Moreover, the study found that meals with the combination of both spices, or no spices at all, were more enjoyable to eat than those with only one spice. This highlights the importance of balance in flavoring your meals—too much of a single spice might overpower the dish, while a combination can enhance both taste and health benefits. Practical Takeaways: (1) Incorporate Spices: Adding a small amount of black pepper and turmeric to your meals might help manage blood sugar levels, especially after carbohydrate-rich meals like breakfast. (2) Balanced Flavoring: When using spices, consider combining them to enhance the overall taste and enjoyment of your food. A balanced mix could make your meals more enjoyable while also providing health benefits. (3) Daily Use: These findings suggest simple changes in your daily meals can have a positive impact on your health, making spices like black pepper and turmeric easy, accessible tools for better managing blood sugar naturally. This study shows how small, everyday ingredients can make a significant difference in health, providing an easy and tasty way to potentially improve your well-being. Study: PubMed 38628217
