🌱 Collaboration to accelerate carbon market engagement was a key theme at COP28 UAE. Announced at the event, was the collaboration between leading international organisations in the voluntary carbon market, to support businesses throughout different phases of their net zero transition. The organisations said they will create an end-to-end integrity framework, offering comprehensive and consistent guidance on decarbonisation, including the use of carbon credits for residual emissions. The participating international organisations are: • Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI)  • The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) • We Mean Business Coalition (WMB) • Climate Disclosure Project (CDP) • Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) • Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) The collaboration between these organisations is beneficial for several reasons: 🎓 Expertise sharing: Each organisation brings unique expertise, such as in market integrity, emission reduction strategies, and scientific data, ensuring a comprehensive approach to corporate climate action. 📜 Standard setting: Unified standards and guidelines, developed through collaboration, help businesses align their climate actions with global goals, ensuring consistency. 🏅 Credibility: Collaborative efforts by reputable organisations enhance the credibility of corporate climate actions, building trust and confidence within the industry. 🌎 Scalability: By working together, these organisations can support more businesses, amplifying the impact of climate initiatives globally. Allianz has developed open-source tool SAMEpath to identify emission reductions and investments needed for countries to reach 2050 sustainability goals under the Paris Agreement. Allianz SE chief economist Ludovic Subran said: “After the Paris Agreement, the thinking was that the world needed a simple Google Maps-like tool to orient us on reducing greenhouse gases,” he said. “Unfortunately, there is an almost unmanageable number of models and scenarios now. SAMEpath simplifies this into one tool that can inform users where we are, how we can reach net zero from here and do so given the situation.” The SAMEpath dashboard looks to harmonise existing analyses on climate scenarios, simultaneously enhancing it with its own calculations to provide more details on economic developments and climate transition risks. We're delighted to share that NTT Ltd.'s net-zero targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the WWF. This initiative aims to define and promote best practices in emissions reduction and net-zero goals, while helping organizations to set net-zero targets in line with the latest climate science – including providing independent validation of these targets. Following a detailed assessment, the SBTi has determined that our greenhouse-gas reduction targets (net-zero in our operations by 2030, and in our value chain by 2040) are in line with the Paris Agreement of limiting the earth’s warming to 1.5°C. The World Bank Bank published this week a report on Green Digital Transformation: How to Sustainably Close the Digital Divide and Harness Digital Tools for Climate Action. A very comprehensive and insightful report that places the right focus on how digital technologies are increasingly shaping responses to climate change in the green-digital nexus. They write about early warning systems that can alert populations when storms are looming, and apps that are helping farmers choose drought-resistant seeds etc. They also place a focus on the need to bridge the digital divide that places almost 3 billion people digitally unconnected, with the majority concentrated in the global south. And finally they point to the need for a more strategic approach by Governments to develop, enable, and scale digital solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change. The latter is the message cBrain and I bring to COP28 UAE. We have the standard digital platform to scale government processes and workflows so they can execute the political ambitions through digital permitting of sustainable energy production, digital inspection and control of decisions and progress, approvals and subsidies etc. All digital solutions that can be configured at high speed and low risk using the best practices from multiple governments and thus close the time gap from political agreement to implementation and real-life impact on reducing CO2 or restoring our biodiversity.     #cop28 #worldbank #climatechange #digitaltransformation Seth Ayers Sara Ballan

🌍 The Crucial Role of Carbon Dioxide Removal in Combating Climate Change🌍 An extraordinary collective initiative between the Microsoft Carbon Removal team and Carbon Direct aims to foster dialogue within the Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) community. I would like to highlight a few key insights from this report's overview, which is available online here: https://lnkd.in/dzN8xRp3 The Essence of CDR: CDR is much more than just a technology; it's a multi-faceted approach involving various techniques to remove excess CO2 from our atmosphere. This is vital in mitigating the impacts of global warming. A Spectrum of Solutions: From natural processes like reforestation to high-tech methods like direct air capture, CDR englobes a broad range of solutions, each with its unique set of benefits and challenges. Market Dynamics and Investment: The development of a robust CDR market is critical. It's not just about technology; it's also about creating financial and regulatory frameworks that encourage innovation and implementation. Policy Matters: The success of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) relies heavily on having good and solid government rules and support. This includes carbon pricing, supportive regulations, and incentives that drive both development and adoption. (I'd even go so far as to say that if the CDR market stays voluntary, it'll be harder to tackle its challenges.) Addressing Challenges: Yes, there are hurdles – technological, financial, and ecological. But overcoming these is key to realising the full potential of CDR in our climate action strategies. A Piece of the Climate Puzzle: CDR is not a standalone solution but an integral part of a comprehensive approach to climate change mitigation, complementing our ongoing emission reduction efforts. Looking Ahead: The field is evolving rapidly, with research focused on enhancing efficiency, affordability, and understanding long-term impacts. Just completed the "Net Zero 101: What, Why and How" e-course! 🎓🌍 This course provided an in-depth understanding of net zero and its importance as a climate goal. I learned to: - Define anthropogenic climate change and its link to net zero. - Identify key UN organizations, milestones, and treaties in climate action. - Analyze environmental and socio-economic impacts of climate change. - Recognize the importance of a whole-of-society approach and the roles of different actors in achieving net zero. - Contextualize measures to achieve net zero and find sustainable ways to reduce carbon footprints. - Select the most effective renewable energy solutions based on cost-effectiveness and sustainability.
