It's not an easy read, but it's an important one. Publishing the AoC Mental Health Report 2024 today is a purposeful reminder of the mental health crisis impacting further education. It is time for colleges to be directly and sustainably funded, and for FE students to benefit from emerging national policy addressing mental health in education. As a minimum, all colleges should be included in LA suicide prevention strategies - we hope this report supports and informs conversations locally to enable this. Nationally, we support a cross-government partnership, bringing health and education strategies together, to ensure policies and initiatives to improve mental health support in education reaches every student. One life lost is too many. I am humbled by the incredible (yet still unfunded) work delivered by colleges and take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to every leader and practitioner for acknowledging mental health as a strategic priority. I also note that this work comes at a cost, recognising the impossible pressures on college budgets and staff wellbeing - this is not sustainable, but I truly believe we have an opportunity for change. I hope this year under a new government we will see inclusive and funded policies that truly make a positive difference for our FE community. The sooner the better, there's much to do. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #MentalHealth #LoveOurColleges

September is #WorldSuicidePreventionMonth, and September 10th was #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. This year's theme is "Changing the narrative on suicide", with a call to action "Start the Conversation" to shift from silence towards understanding and support. Our government created multiple resources and mental health supports, which can be accessed here: https://lnkd.in/gnpyGNGV It is important to reduce the stigma, raise awareness, focus our attention on the issue and send the message that suicides are preventable.

NAMI reports that "Millions of people in the U.S. are affected by mental illness each year," and that "It’s important to measure how common mental illness is, so we can understand its physical, social and financial impact — and so we can show that no one is alone. These numbers are also powerful tools for raising public awareness, stigma-busting and advocating for better health care." Get more stats. Let's face it, people. We can't always rush to pour money into preventing symptoms without addressing the root cause. Have you ever sat down to think about why people commit acts of violence, take their own lives, or suffer in silence? Mental health is real. Look around you—do you think all those struggling with depression, anger, anxiety, and other issues can truly afford the services they need? We say it's free, but is the quality and response really satisfying? Reality and truth: most of these people can't even afford the basic cost of living. Some go to bed on an empty stomach, yet we keep claiming that services are available and affordable. Who are we fooling, Batswana? The stigma we've placed on them, the jokes we make about their cries for help—how do we expect them to trust us? It's time to change the narrative. Let's build a society where mental health care is genuinely accessible, where we address the root causes, and where no one feels ashamed to seek help. #MentalHealthAwareness #EndTheStigma #MentalHealthMatters #Batswana #MentalHealthAdvocacy

Addressing mental health issues requires a comprehensive approach that includes adequate resources, well-trained staff, and appropriate facilities. The reduction of psychiatric facilities and services in the past has left many individuals without the necessary support, often resulting in overcrowded emergency rooms and long waiting times. Adequate funding is crucial to expand mental health services, including community-based programs and inpatient care facilities. Investing in training for mental health professionals and ensuring they are paid fairly can improve the quality of care and attract more individuals to the Raising awareness about mental health issues and reducing stigma can encourage more people to seek help early. Combining mental health services with primary care can ensure a more holistic approach to patient well-being. Providing support and resources for early intervention can prevent mental health issues from escalating. Strong policies and advocacy efforts are necessary to push for systemic changes and sustained commitment to mental health care. By taking these actions, we can begin to address the mental health crisis and ensure that individuals receive the care and support they need. Bring on the new act!

Poverty and poor mental health are intertwined. Mental health issues are an increasingly large part of the global burden of diseases and a leading cause of disability. Despite its inclusion in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), only 2% of total government health expenditure and 1% of global development assistance for health are dedicated to mental health, according to the World Health Organization’s Mental Health Atlas 2020.
