Today sees the third Padel Pro Am Tour event of the year Padium organised by Oliver Morgan, featuring top British talent pairing up with celebrity padel fans from sport, media, hospitality and business. Celebrity endorsement of the sport, and using their huge followings on social media, will certainly help with awareness and interest. And today's event is definitely grabbing media attention with a number of outlets lining up to talk to the celebs. Keep an eye of the coverage over the next 48 hours, I will be. Having been a journalist, we'd regularly use events like this to get the story we want. Padel is the vehicle and they're no such thing as bad publicity right! Secondly, in professional golf, pro-ams are common place. They are held the day before tournaments tee off, and sees sponsors and amateurs tee up alongside the pros for a social few hours and some tips. At regional events the pros are competing and playing with amateurs. It's part of the game. The pace of golf may help, but is this an approach padel can explore to embrace keen amateurs, who pay for the privilege to play alongside the top players? Finally announced...and it clashes with the #olympicgames in Paris. It's great news for the competing federations, the teams and players to have it in the diary. However, from a media and PR perspective, padel is competing to be heard by sports media. To stage it when the Olympics is on, which might have been the only option, isn't going to do it any favours in getting media attention either. It is also the start of the peak holiday season in Europe, so prices to get there are another factor. A progress of Padel Question: There are a lot of smart and informed people in US Padel business now. My question to you is this. What percentage of the Padel courts being built in the US are either for private clubs or private residences? Any new Padel court being built in the US is a positive, but if they are private, it’s not really helping to grow the sport, is it? At least not as much as membership clubs that are also open to the public. This is one of the reasons I love what Taktika Padel is doing in California. Ryan Redondo and Gabriel Perez Krieb are businessmen, but they also have a mission to make Padel accessible to as many people as possible. A lot of clubs in Florida are also accessible. I had little trouble finding opportunities last summer when I was in South Florida for a week. Here in Philly this is not the case. We will soon have more than 20 padel courts, but all but three of them will be at private clubs. Padelphia at AFC Fitness in Bala Cynwd is the only place the public can play. For now at least.
