A few years ago, I was invited to speak at NRECA's Power Exchange annual meeting about work we were doing at EKPC using employee brand ambassadors. I made the comment that we like three things in Kentucky - Basketball (although we are apparently a football school now???), Bourbon and Horses. I kind of laughed and said "I know a bunch of you thought the third thing would be banjos", so when I saw this, I couldn't pass up taking a picture of it.
Kentucky gets a bad rap. The truth is, life here is somewhere between banjos and the glitz and glamour of the Kentucky Derby. We know when you hear the words Eastern Kentucky, very few positive images come to mind. However, Kentucky is a great place to live and work. We have more coastline than the state of Florida, some of the prettiest hiking and lake systems you will ever find, a great food and arts scene (granted those are in our "big-ish" cities), breathtaking horse farms and distilleries, and an incredibly strong logistics and advanced manufacturing business base, largely supported by the electric cooperative network in the state. And, it is true that we like college basketball and bourbon. Don't rule out Kentucky if you are looking for a job, or just a quick weekend trip. Come to the Derby, or do the Kentucky Bourbon Trail or go the Corvette Museum. We'll make sure you see a banjo or two just to keep it real, but you'll see and experience so much more.
