The landscape is constantly shifting; staying informed means staying ahead. 4. **Hands-On Experience:** There's no substitute for direct experience. Applying RAG in various scenarios has deepened my understanding of its capabilities and how it can be tailored for different applications. I'm excited to share that I recently completed an incredible learning journey with the Institute for the Future's (IFTF) "Three Horizons of AI" course! 🌟🤖 This three-part course provided a comprehensive overview of the evolving AI landscape and how large language models like ChatGPT are beginning to transform how we work, collaborate, and define what it means to be human. Through hands-on experiences with generative AI tools and structured forecasting methods, we explored the near, mid, and long-term possibilities for AI across different industries and use cases. 🔍 Horizon 1: What we see today: I familiarized myself with generative AI, got hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI tools, and even crafted my own AI-driven forecast. This session laid the foundation for understanding the current AI landscape. 🔭 Horizon 2: Envisioning the next 5 years: By identifying risks and opportunities, I gained insights into how AI will impact organizations in the mid-term. This foresight will undoubtedly help me stay ahead of the curve. 🚀 Horizon 3: Imagining the next 10 years and beyond: I pushed my strategic thinking to the next level, exploring how AI will integrate with existing systems, shaping potential roles, applications, and user contexts. Huge shoutout to the IFTF staff and all the likeminded people joining the course for this enlightening experience and for the exciting exchange of thoughts. I’m grateful for the unique insights this course provided into the present and future of AI. Here’s how it applies: Generative AI's Appeal to System 1: ➡️ Ease and Fluency: Generative AI generates text, images, and other content with remarkable fluency and speed, creating a highly engaging and satisfying user experience. This appeals to System 1’s preference for cognitive ease and can lead to uncritical acceptance of the information presented. ➡️ Confirmation Bias: Generative AI can easily be used to reinforce existing biases. Users can craft prompts that elicit responses aligning with their preconceptions, creating echo chambers and reinforcing pre-existing beliefs. ➡️ Truthiness and Misinformation: Generative AI, due to its probabilistic nature, can produce plausible-sounding but factually incorrect or misleading information. This “hallucination” problem can fuel the spread of misinformation, particularly when users rely on AI as a source of truth without verifying its outputs. Generative AI’s Impact on System 2: ➡️ Over-Reliance and Deskilling: The ease of using generative AI for tasks like writing, summarising, and brainstorming can lead to an over-reliance on the tool, causing a decline in human skills and critical thinking abilities. Just as calculators can reduce our mental arithmetic skills, relying on AI for routine cognitive tasks might diminish our capacity for independent thought and creative problem-solving. ➡️ Reduced Effort and Engagement: Generative AI can automate the effortful work of information gathering and content creation, reducing the need for System 2 engagement. This can lead to a more passive mode of learning and a shallower understanding of the information being processed. ➡️ Weakening of Critical Evaluation: The authoritative tone and persuasive presentation of AI-generated content can make users less likely to critically evaluate the information, leading to a passive acceptance of the AI’s outputs as truth, even when they contain errors or biases. But like any technology, it has its pros and cons. Pros of Generative AI: -Increased productivity: Generative AI can automate or speed up tasks, increasing productivity. -Lowered skill or time barriers: It can generate content, removing or lowering skill or time barriers. Cons of Generative AI: -Generative AI also raises concerns touching upon legal, ethical, political, ecological, social, and economic issues. Adapting as Developers: -Generative AI is changing the way developers work. It offers code suggestions and entire functions in response to natural language prompts and existing code. However, developers need to understand the attributes that make up quality code and prompt the tool for the right outputs.  -Maximizing productivity gains and minimizing risks when deploying generative AI–based tools will require engineering leaders to take a structured approach that encompasses generative AI training and coaching, use case selection, workforce upskilling, and risk controls. Generative AI is a powerful tool, but it’s essential to understand its capabilities and limitations.
