As annoying as this would have been in my previous role in the world of recurring subscriptions, I’m a huge fan of consumer control when it comes to subscription management. Though virtual cards and tools like this require extra attention and analysis, it’s the responsibility merchants to stay up to date with BIN and payment error code data to keep churn metrics accurate, optimize payment recovery systems, and shape trial/offer strategy around handling payments in the most efficient and customer friendly way. Improvements definitely need to happen around ensuring the most useful and complete data gets to merchants easily and accurately, but overall I see innovations like this as a positive.

Capital One has launched a subscription management tool that allows their customers to block subscription payments through the Cap One banking app. They are leveraging the technology from Minna Technologies, which was recently acquired by Mastercard. I've written about this topic at length in multiple posts, but a heads up to subscription merchants to check their Cap One BINs to see how the decline reason codes start showing up, and to make sure you are attributing those declines to "Voluntary" vs "Involuntary" Churn (which you should be tracking separately).

Why switch on Real Time Payments through Dots (YC S21) End users getting paid immediately is a more rewarding experience that builds trust in us and our commercial customers. End users are happier when money is faster vs. slower. Our customers see lower churn, higher retention, and a higher NPS. On the back end, it also reduces our customer service load. There’s no black magic. The RTP rails let our commercial customers pay end users instantly if: 1. funds are going to the bank and  2. the end customer’s account is at an RTP-enabled financial institution. As I said the other day, there are over 600 of them that are live with RTP including the largest, so I challenge anybody to find more than a tiny fraction of end users who can’t receive RTP payouts. #fintech #rtp #payouts
