New Mexico is committed to renewable energy, aiming for 100% carbon-free electricity by 2045. The $7 billion Solar for All Program supports disadvantaged communities, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and cutting electric bills for over 900,000 households. Inclusive Prosperity Capital's "Powering America Together" integrates with the US Department of Energy’s National Community Solar Partnership, promoting community solar projects, quality jobs, and equitable workforce development. Initiatives like Oweesta Corporation's program ensure solar access across Tribal lands. At KiloNewton LLC, we're proud to be part of this green revolution. We optimize the layout of solar projects to maximize production while minimizing costs. Our efforts help developers and EPCs (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) providers identify the most cost-effective sites and optimize site usage. We have gobs of commercial and industrial buildings here that are suitable for rooftop solar farms. We have populations that could benefit from such projects. So why is it not happening? Community engagement in renewables is a topic of big conversation. Most recently, the NSW Select Committee on the Feasibility of Undergrounding the Transmission Infrastructure for Renewable Energy Projects released its report which called out the Energy Charter's social licence initiatives: https://lnkd.in/gDi29Vzr “The [Energy Charter] Better Practice Social Licence Guideline…has been identified as a positive driver of improved community consultation and stronger social licence outcomes and appears to us to be a clear opportunity …..”   👉 Recommendation 7 from the Select Committee is that to improve community engagement practices and social licence around renewable energy transmission projects, "EnergyCo look for ways to further enhance its relationship with the Energy Charter." The Department of Energy challenged the community solar industry to achieve 20 GW of community solar by 2025, up from the current 7 GW. To support this goal, the DOE announced two initiatives: the Equitable Solar Communities of Practice program and the release of the LODGE model. The Equitable Solar Communities of Practice program will provide $75,000 to five organizations to identify resource gaps and support the development of best practices for equitable solar. The LODGE model aims to identify cost-effective ways to site community solar on the grid, minimizing interconnection costs and maximizing distributed resource deployment. Community solar is expected to experience significant growth in the next five years, with Wood Mackenzie projecting at least 6 GW of capacity to be added between 2023 and 2027. This expansion, at an annual average rate of 11%, is attributed to an improved policy environment and renewed developer interest. Despite 41 states and D.C. having at least one community solar project, only 22 states and D.C. currently have supportive policies in place.
