I am one month into my study abroad journey at Rutgers University in New Jersey, exchanging ideas and experiences from my home university, The University of Manchester. I am diving into fascinating modules like Environmental Law and Natural Law in the USA, Energy and Society, Energy Technology and their Environmental Impacts and Meteorological Analysis. I have also joined the Students for Environmental and Energy Development group where we meet to discuss, innovative and collaborate to create a greener Rutgers. "As a French master student from Ecole normale supérieure in #Paris, specializing in chemistry, I am doing an internship at the Department of Environmental Science, Aarhus University, under the guidance of Kai Bester and Andrea Mongelli. 🧪👩🔬 My #internship focuses on a study of Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBRs) for pesticide removal from the #Stengaarden dumpsite, with a particular interest in the role of iron in the process. This research aims to explore #sustainable solutions for environmental remediation, extending to the biofilter and the other issues at the Stengaarden pilot site. 🔍 🧫 My education's background is mainly molecular and physical chemistry but I intend to specialize in Environmental Chemistry since it is a domain of great interest for me. Meet Tomas Stonkus, internship student at FTMC Department of Environmental Research, 4th year bachelor student at VU Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences 🥼 Tomas participated in the national scientific conference "Chemija ir Geomokslai 2024", where he presented a poster - and was one of the winners in this category 🏆 Congratulations to our young colleague, and good luck with your scientific career! 💪 T. Stonkus' poster presentation was "Microplastic Particles Distribution in Lithuanian Rivers and Their Chemical and Physical Properties". He studied the water of the following Lithuanian rivers - Smeltalė, Minija, Šalčia, Revuona and Nemunas - samples of which were sent to the Department of Environmental Research by volunteers of the European campaign "Plastic Pirates" 🥤 "The most microplastic pollution was found in the Nemunas, which is probably logical," says T. What does our grant program support? 🤔 Four students used SEN Grants to help fund a fall 2023 excursion to Antarctica through an embedded course in the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences. We think that's pretty cool. 🐧 For students not planning a study abroad experience, we can still be there to help them reach their goals. It's so inspiring to see young engineers tackling the issues of sustainability and renewal in practical and pragmatic ways for the good of society and the planet

"Scientists generally know little about the nonscience parts of governance, communication, and the economic and procedural systems that affect whether and how science discoveries advance through development and into the public domain. Here, academia, funding agencies, and professional societies and foundations bear crucial responsibility. Organizations that fund research and training should require that universities provide substantial career exploration courses to graduate trainees. Optional 1-day anecdotal presentations are insufficient, and deferring such offerings to the post-doc stage is too late. In parallel, professional societies and advocacy organizations should offer internships or fellowships that place newly minted science PhDs into influential outside-of-science environments." A "transitioned" scientist myself, I could not agree more with Keith. He also mentions AAAS' Science and Technology Policy Fellows program. This program was the blueprint of the Swiss Scientific Policy Grants, of which I had the honor and pleasure to be a holder back in 2005. This was the very start of my journey as a scientist outside academia. Keith states, "in today’s complex world, we also need scientists resolving problems and rendering decisions across society to ensure that science and technology adds value to lives and livelihoods, sustains a safe environment, and contributes to security and economic well-being for all. We must illuminate those career pathways for all trainees." So let's illuminate those pathways to make sure that the advantage of promising careers outside the academic world, in private companies and in public sector institutions, are showcased at the university level as well as at the level of each research group.
