I am very happy to share part of my master/PhD work on PRRSV detection in sows by a novel collector I developed, tonsil oral scrubbing (TOSc), which is adpated from collectors used in test-removal of ASFV infected sows in China. TOSc can target soft palate tonsil without snaring the sows and takes only ~15 seconds to sample. There are major differences in ASFV and PRRSV elimination strategies and sample types based on my work experience in two countries. In China, we focused on sampling and early detecting ASFV infected sows when ASFV prevalence is low, which proves very successful for wild-type ASFV strains. In the US, we expose and close the whole breeding herd and wait for the sow immunity to clear the virus and demonstrate success of elimination by sampling from suckling piglets. It's interesting to compare and benchmark two sampling/disease elimination methods. Whether test-removal work in PRRSV requires further research and practice. Will continously work and update the results. Thanks to Dr. Johnson Clayton Clayton Johnson for the invite. Thanks for the Field epi team Field Epidemiology for all the fun sampling times ^_~.

The H5N1 #birdflu outbreak in U.S. dairy cattle has left scientists with many unanswered questions. Despite government efforts, farmer reluctance is hindering research, reminiscent of early #COVID-19 information gaps. Impact - 82 herds in nine states are affected, but virus dynamics remain unclear. Insight - Transparency and cooperation are vital for managing outbreaks. Questions to Ponder - ▪️ How can we improve farmer-scientist collaboration? ▪️ What policies encourage transparency without penalties? ▪️ Are we ready for future zoonotic diseases? #PublicHealth #AnimalHealth
These are the bird flu questions that influenza and animal scientists desperately want answered

The presence of #mycotoxins in poultry feed can cause necrosis of the oral mucosa and esophagus, which decreases the ability of the digestive tract to digest and absorb nutrients. Mycotoxins can also render poultry more susceptible to bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella, according to a report co-authored by Gino Lorenzoni, DVM, PhD, assistant professor of poultry science and avian health, Penn State University extension service.
