This week is Learning Disability Week! This year's theme is "Do you see me?" which is all about being seen, heard and valued, and challenging the barriers people with a learning disability face. Our technology helps people with a range of learning disabilities to live and work independently, so we have seen firsthand how having a learning disability doesn't need to hold people back in excelling in their passions and persuits! Today's topic is "Do you hear me?" At Hill House School, we've seen firsthand the transformative power of technology like Smartbox Assistive Technology's AAC devices. These tools provide a voice to children who face challenges in speech and communication, empowering them to express themselves and make choices independently. Today, on the first #InternationalDayOfPlay, I am excited to share a video from Perkins School for the Blind focusing on playful learning for children with disabilities. What does a child with disabilities need to learn to play? Likely, toys and materials they can access and adults with specialized teaching skills to help with exploration, communication, and decision-making. As Learning Disability Week comes to a close, it is important to reflect on how we can better support individuals with learning disabilities💜 With 1.5 million people in the UK (2% of the population in England) having a learning disability, it is disheartening that they remain one of the most excluded groups in society. The #DoYouSeeMe campaign emphasizes the significance of acknowledging and valuing the experiences of individuals with learning disabilities, recognizing the unique ways they communicate. It is imperative that everyone is treated as an individual, with their own unique experiences and perspectives.
