This week is Mencap's Learning Disability Week 😊 This year’s theme is centred around ‘Do you see me?’ - a reminder that people with learning disabilities need to be seen, heard and valued. A number of the children who visit us at Swings & Smiles have a learning disability. The level of support a child with a learning disability may require will vary from child to child, but we’re here to make sure every child can experience the joys of play no matter what their needs might be. It’s so important that we give children with learning disabilities spaces where they are understood and valued as individuals. By creating an accessible space where they can be themselves, we can build their confidence and interpersonal skills. It's essential to recognize the unique struggles faced by those with learning disabilities, from battling low self-esteem and social exclusion to enduring bullying. By increasing awareness, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential. 🌟 Learning Disability Week! 🌟 This week is Learning Disability Week, a nationwide campaign that is all about breaking down barriers and amplifying the voices of those with learning disabilities. Today's topic is "Do you hear me?" At Hill House School, we've seen firsthand the transformative power of technology like Smartbox Assistive Technology's AAC devices. These tools provide a voice to children who face challenges in speech and communication, empowering them to express themselves and make choices independently. As Ofsted rightly noted, the 'talkpad' devices have become more than just tools; they've become voices that are heard and respected. 🌍💙 #LearningDisabilityWeek #DoYouHearMe #AACDevices

Today, on the first #InternationalDayOfPlay, I am excited to share a video from Perkins School for the Blind focusing on playful learning for children with disabilities. What does a child with disabilities need to learn to play? Likely, toys and materials they can access and adults with specialized teaching skills to help with exploration, communication, and decision-making. Let's remember today that there is more than one way to play! 🎈🎉 Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/e2ANrk56

As Learning Disability Week comes to a close, it is important to reflect on how we can better support individuals with learning disabilities💜 With 1.5 million people in the UK (2% of the population in England) having a learning disability, it is disheartening that they remain one of the most excluded groups in society. The #DoYouSeeMe campaign emphasizes the significance of acknowledging and valuing the experiences of individuals with learning disabilities, recognizing the unique ways they communicate. It is imperative that everyone is treated as an individual, with their own unique experiences and perspectives. Everyone should be heard and supported in the ways that best meet their needs as the only expert in anyone’s experience is themselves ✨ #DoYouSeeMe #LearningDisabilityWeek #pbs4 #pbs #learningdisabilities #neurodisabilities #expertinexperience
