Johnnie Walker unveils world’s lightest whisky bottle: a pilot in sustainable packaging Johnnie Walker is pushing the boundaries of #sustainable #packaging with its Blue Label Ultra bottle, the world’s lightest 70cl Scotch whisky bottle at just 180g. For every gram of glass reduced, carbon emissions drop by over half a gram, a promising move for the industry. First on-trade trial of 70 cl paper-based bottle for whisky Hot on the heels of its 80 ml Baileys mini paper bottle trial, Diageo have just announced the launch of its first 70cl paper-based bottle trial for Johnnie Walker Black Label at The 1820 Bar in Edinburgh. The bottle has again been developed in partnership with PA Consulting and PulPac, and is made from 90% paper, with a minimal plastic liner to aid recyclability. The trial will assess how bartenders handle the bottle in a busy bar setting, running until mid-October. This new design is 60% lighter and could reduce carbon emissions by up to 47% compared to glass. Diageo continues to push for innovative and sustainable packaging solutions across its portfolio. Teaming up with Finland-based Huhtamaki, these cups are made from double-walled paperboard with a bioplastic liner, and the lids are crafted from molded fiber. What’s Molded Fiber? Molded fiber is made from recycled paper products, like old newspapers. It’s shaped into things like cup lids through pulping, molding, and drying. It's biodegradable and a sturdy, eco-friendly alternative to plastic. What’s a Bioplastic Liner? A bioplastic liner is a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic. Made from renewable sources like corn starch or sugarcane, it provides a moisture barrier for the paper cup while being compostable and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Why is this cool? - Compostable Material: The new cups and lids help reduce waste and can be composted. - Local Mandates: They’re starting in California and Minnesota because of local recycling laws, setting the stage for more places to follow. - Sustainability Goals: This helps Starbucks hit its 2030 targets: making packaging 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable, using 50% recycled materials, and cutting down on virgin fossil fuels.
