RHB Banking Group research has issued a note advising investors to sell shares of Berjaya Food, which operates the Starbucks franchise in Malaysia. RHB says the Starbucks boycott could last longer than initially expected if there is no near-term resolution to the Israel-Hamas conflict. “The post-boycott recovery may not be straightforward and it may take Berjaya Food much effort to regain its market share, in view of the intense competition.” RHB says it visited several Starbucks Coffee mall outlets during peak hours and found lacklustre foot traffic. It estimates a 30% to 40% decrease, compared to what is normal. This is despite the shopping centres themselves being crowded. “Most of its competitors, however, had regular footfalls. This situation is worse than what we expected.” RHB slashed its forecast for net profit for the 2024-2026 financial year by 21%, 17% and 7%, after further toning down its sales growth and GPM assumptions to reflect the subdued sales, increased promotional efforts, and efforts to address the aftermath of the boycott. https://lnkd.in/g-4ua4zR

That means that TOBLERONE which was first established in the Swiss capital Bern in 1908 and has since then been proudly Swiss, has lost the #Matterhorn mountain peak from its packaging, one of its most recognizable features. This is because Mondelez has shifted part of its production to Slovakia in Eastern Europe to gain a bigger pie of the market. Major US fast-food chains such as those owned by Yum! Brands are struggling with weaker sales momentum due to high living costs and restrained consumer spending in key markets. Yum! Brands reported a 3% year on year decrease in global same-store sales for the quarter ended March 2024, with its Pizza Hut and KFC divisions driving the decline The recent slowdown comes after a turbulent few years for the fast-food industry. In 2022, however, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions brought another setback, leading to the closure of some franchises in the region. More recently, the combination of rising costs, consumer caution and increased interest rates presents domestic challenges for major US restaurant chains. Abroad, meanwhile, consumer protests over US support for Israel in its war with Hamas are hindering expansion efforts. McDonald's has been hit by boycotts in the Middle East, and KFC had to temporarily close over 100 stores in Malaysia due to boycott-related losses amid the conflict. Despite this, we are seeing QSRs optimistically rely on international expansion plans, with both Yum! and McDonalds eyeing opening 70,000 stores worldwide in 2024. These do hinge heavily on geopolitical tensions being resolved and consumer purchasing power being revived.
