Check out my paper about fashion, modernity in cinema focusing on the reception of the musical Roberta with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in interwar Bucharest: "Roberta at the Capitol and Roxy: Fashion, Cinema, and Modernity in Interwar Bucharest" published in 2023 in the Yearbook of the "Gheorghe Șincai" Institute for Social Sciences and the Humanities of the Romanian Academy, part of my contribution to the project "The Ethos of Dialogue and Education: Romanian - American Cultural Negotiations (1920-1940)" financed by Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding - UEFISCDI. This paper follows the distribution, reception, and influence of Hollywood productions, using the particular case of the movie Roberta, starring Irene Dunne, Fred Astaire, and Ginger Rogers. It follows all stages from preparation, production, dissemination, and critique, and how they were seen from and reacted to in interwar Bucharest. The timeline focuses on the mid-1930s and two-three years before and after. Owing to the difficulties experienced by cinema studios on both sides of the Atlantic and the impending financial crisis in Hollywood, the movie had to rely on the popular Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers pair. Because of this change, the original story was modified to fit the two dancing stars, promising more of a Fred and Ginger extravaganza than a typical romantic musical. Because Roberta did not follow the Fred and Ginger formula, it was soon overtaken by the pair’s largest success, Top Hat, released roughly a year later and has remained largely ignored. The movie was first shown in Bucharest seven months after its initial release in March 1935, at the cinemas Capitol and Roxy, then American, and, finally, Orfeu, until early 1937. Movie reviews and reactions abounded in the general and specialized press, especially in 1936. Beyond its perceptible flaws in plot coherence and expected cinematic experience, Roberta can now be viewed as the closest snapshot into mid-1930s realities, from the level of the story, its modifications from the original informed by financial and censorship reasonings, the necessary promotional language and actions, and its reception, focusing on interwar Bucharest. It can provide valuable social, cultural, aesthetic, and even political clues about the United States, Hollywood in particular, and 1930s Bucharest in its modernity, cosmopolitanism, or fashion-consuming aspects. A twenty-something artist recently asked if I missed being on stage as a performer. My answer to her (without hesitation) was a clear "not in the least!" . While I genuinely loved everything about being on #stage (costumes, make-up, rehearsals, the creative process, applause etc), when I decided to "retire" from being the artist, I was fully ready to step into my next level of Jules which was bringing my #energy into #learning how to run a business, mastering #sales and honing skills to #produce acts & #shows which surprise and delight our audiences all over the country. . Having said all of this, I have a deep and profound #respect for career artists (this should be a given because I had the privilege of growing up in a household of a living legend, and a National treasure, JUNO-Award winner Bob DeAngelis.) I admire the #focus & #dedication to the craft because it is unlike anything I've ever seen. The life-long commitment to the #artistic work is, truly, extraordinary! . For me personally, I knew I could be more impactful on the #business side of the #arts, helping more people access this incredible medium, so here we are today. . In no particular order, here's how my past life as a #performing #artist has helped me as a #circus #entertainment #specialist at present: . 🌟I have #empathy & understanding for the artists & #creative teams. 🌟The performer's #safety & #wellbeing is first, everything else is secondary. {We only work with clients who understand & respect this.} 🌟I can better mitigate #production schedules & spot potential pitfalls because I understand both sides of the equation. 🌟The ability to "feel" when something or someone is "off". I can't explain it - this is simply a gut instinct that never steers me wrong. 🌟Always being confident in my knowledge & our team's abilities BUT ALSO always "a little bit scared." The circus arts always requires extreme #vigilance around all aspects of a #show. Arrogance is your worst enemy in this arena! BTWs this is why you'll always see me pacing a performance area with glasses on - watching out for anything that may go awry (IE enter clueless waiter with a tray full of plates venturing WAY to close to a performance in progress.) ** PRO TIP: We now place security guards around staging areas for exactly this reason. Yes, Sir, on your phone walking right underneath the aerialist - you're indifference will be intercepted.** ✅🤦♀️#GongShow . The art of storytelling comes in myriad forms and effortlessly captivates our imagination. Recently, a new narrative dance musical caught my attention. Not only is its soundtrack derived from Sufjan Stevens’s album, but its theme addresses some profound facets of life and society, and interestingly, even zombies. Far from being just another musical exploit, this performance takes interpretation to a whole new level. Transcribing complex ideas like life, death, love, politics, and community involvement into dance is innovative, connecting with audiences on both an emotive and cognitive dimension. ❤️👥Here's why: • Love & Death: Dance, by its very nature, is intimate and raw. The portrayal of love in all its beauty and complexity to the storytelling of death, exploring its emotional intricacies, is articulated with minimal yet moving choreography. Through viewing this dance, one can experience a broad range of emotions from joy to sadness, taking you on a compelling sentimental journey. • Community: Dance is inherently a medium that thrives on interaction, collaboration, and a shared experience. It's fascinating that the choreographers chose to dissect the term 'community.' They showcase that organized chaos and unified strength can co-exist, embodying the very essence of community spirit. • Politics: Whereas written or spoken words may be read or heard and leave an impression, actions, as depicted in this narrative dance, speak volumes. Politics interpreted through body movement observes the silent power struggles and dynamics much more than words often do. • Zombies: The dance concept isn't void of brevity, as shown in the inclusion of zombies. A grotesque, unreal metaphor perhaps signalling our society's potential to be led by mindless pursuit, devoid of rational thought. Judging by these narrative elements, I predict this dance musical is set to redefine the borders of contemporary choreography. In this highly visual era, artists are constantly striving to break boundaries, inviting audiences into a more immersive, emotive journey. The inclusion of personal, societal, and even metaphoric themes through such a vibrant, dynamic mode emphasizes not only the power of art, but also its necessity. By communicating complex concepts seamlessly through dance, these artists are pushing the envelope on our traditional understandings of interpretive performances. 🚀 Eagerly awaiting this concoction of music, dance, and storytelling! Most of the choreography is performed by a dance double named Nick Pauley, who's credited as Dancepool. "If it looks like the person who's dancing doesn't have arthritis, that's him," Reynolds said of Pauley. Warning: Major spoilers ahead for "Deadpool & Wolverine." Ryan Reynolds is many things — actor, producer, writer, and entrepreneur. But busting out *NSYNC choreography isn't his strong suit. "Deadpool & Wolverine," the third installment of the "Deadpool" franchise, costars Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine. Before the two characters join forces for an epic team-up, Deadpool goes to North Dakota to dig up the grave of Logan, who died in the third stand-alone Wolverine film "Logan." When soldiers from the Time Variance Authority (TVA) catch up to Deadpool, a gory battle ensues and the merc fights them with the help of Logan's adamantium skeleton. The fight sequence is set to *NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye," with Deadpool performing Darrin Henson's iconic choreography while fending off the soldiers. "I mean, he's doing a lot of the moves that have been established previously by *NSYNC. If it looks like the person who's dancing doesn't have arthritis, that's him." Deadpool and a TVA soldier in "Deadpool & Wolverine." Marvel Studios Reynolds said that he was able to execute some of the moves, but with less ease than the dancer.
