The African Union-Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), in collaboration with the Government of Botswana, announced its initiation of the formulation of a comprehensive National Blue Economy Strategy for Botswana.
This significant step marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to enhance the sustainable utilisation of marine and aquatic resources in Botswana and across the African continent.
AU-IBAR's endeavor, supported by the Government of Norway, is aligned with the broader objective of enhancing the harmonised implementation of the Africa Blue Economy Strategy by African Union Member States (AU MS) and Regional Economic Communities (RECs).
This initiative follows the recommendations of the Honorable Ministers at the 2019 Specialised Technical Committee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment (STC-ARDWE), urging comprehensive support for awareness creation, capacity building, and the establishment of Blue Governance mechanisms at various levels, resulting into the endorsement of Africa Blue Economy Strategy as a blueprint by the AU heads of states at the high-level meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in February 2020.
Through extensive consultations conducted at continental, regional, and national levels, AU-IBAR has developed Implementation Plans and a framework for Blue Governance Coordination Mechanism.
The next phase involves providing technical assistance to selected AU member states, including Botswana, to develop National Blue Economy Strategies, Implementation Plans, and Blue Governance Coordination Framework Mechanisms.
