First post in English to say that it’s time the private sector did its part to ensure African children get access to education ! Yesterday was the international Day of the African child, and this year’s theme was “Education for all African children”, a theme that Nomad Education not only believes in, but is actively and intentionally contributing to. Truth is, there is so much that remains to be done to ensure all African children can access the quality education they deserve. The United Nations #SustainableDevelopmentGoals, and #SDG4 in particular, recommends that countries spend 20% of their national budget on education. UNICEF just published new data that shows that only 9 out of 49 African countries actually do so, and that 4 out of 5 children aged ten years old on the continent are unable to read and understand a simple story. The private sector has a huge role to play in making sure that African children can access the tools they need to not only learn but also stay in school and succeed in acquiring the academic knowledge they need to live dignified lives. Digital solutions that can ensure school is not disrupted, and that students keep afloat of their levels and academic standards, do exist: at Nomad, we are one of those important solutions that could make a huge difference in the lives of francophone African students in the next decade. As a proud #BCorp and a true supporter of #SDG4, Nomad Education has been working with non profit partners to bring our digital solution to African children who need it the most. For example, our premium solution is used for free by 400 girls through our partnership with the non-profit Malaika in DRC, as well as accessed by 100,000 children in Senegal through our work with AMADE - Association Mondiale des Amis de l'Enfance. Additionally, our product has also been made available to 500,000 children through our partnership with the Fondation Orange in 17 countries on the African continent. This is just the start of our impact. We’re also developing a new corporate philanthropic pillar called Nomad Crisis that will enable us to bring our tool for free to children whose schooling has been disrupted by environmental or social crisis. Indeed, UNICEF has also pointed out that these disruptions are heavily impeding on African children’s capacity to maintain their schooling and fragilizing educational systems that are already under-resourced. According to UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) 2022 report on education in Africa, "Of all regions, sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates of education exclusion. Over one-fifth of children between the ages of about 6 and 11 are out of school, followed by one-third of youth between the ages of about 12 and 14. According to UIS data, almost 60% of youth between the ages of about 15 and 17 are not in school". These are the statistics that are at the heart of our mission at Annot: to play our part in improving access to education while leveraging the massive African diaspora contingent. Empowering Through Literacy! The AVBOB Road to Literacy campaign, in partnership with Oxford University Press Southern Africa, that aired on e-TV puts a crucial spotlight on the role of literacy as a means to empower children and schools in South Africa. There is a pressing need to collectively improve and enhance literacy nationwide. An international study (PIRLS report, 2021) reveals that 75% of South African schools face a dire shortage of reading materials, significantly higher than the global average of 45%. Alarmingly, 81% of Grade 4 learners struggle to read for meaning, an increase from 78% in 2016, placing South Africa last among the 57 participating countries. Through our partnership with Oxford University Press Southern Africa, AVBOB is determined to tackle this challenge head-on. By donating 500 trolley libraries to primary schools and NPOs in need, we aim to make a significant difference in the literacy landscape of South Africa. The first instance was when our home in Gaza faced devastation from bombings, rendering it uninhabitable. Through what seemed like a miracle, we managed to escape to the Zawaida area in southern Gaza. However, our refuge was short-lived as bombs targeted our new haven, prompting another escape to Rafah near the border crossing. Now, amidst the persistent threat of war and the pervasive insecurity in Gaza, Rafah faces a new peril. The Rafah crossing might signify the culmination of my journey, or perhaps it's the threshold to a new beginning, where education outside Gaza can pave the way for my dreams. Despite the challenges, I've toiled tirelessly to save for travel and further my education. Yet, the ravages of war have stripped away everything, compounded by the incessant need to seek safety for not only myself but also my elderly parents. Passionate about women's and children's rights, I've actively raised awareness through workshops and initiatives in collaboration with civil society organizations. Empowering women economically to combat the repercussions of violence has been a focal point, whether through mentoring small entrepreneurial endeavors or organizing impactful events. #Volunteer Experience with Sera Schools Initiative My name is Idowu Timothy Adeyemo, and I am passionate about fostering quality education for all children, including the less privileged. As a student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, I had the privilege of serving as the pioneer president of the Ile-Ife chapter of Sera Schools Initiatives, an NGO dedicated to advocating for quality education. During my tenure, I led efforts to visit schools across Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, delivering motivational education speeches to inspire and empower students. One of the highlights of my experience was organizing an education seminar for students of Rehoboth Comprehensive College in Ile-Ife. For this event, I personally invited Mrs. Victoria Komolafe, a renowned educationist, to speak to the students, providing them with valuable insights and encouragement. My commitment to improving my society through education drives my ongoing involvement in educational initiatives. At the Crystalline Charity Empowerment Foundation, where education is one of our core areas, we strive to ensure quality education for all children, including orphans and the less privileged. At Crystalline Charity Empowerment Foundation, our mission is to provide quality education to children in underserved communities. We actively visit schools across various states in Nigeria, conducting educational sensitization programs aimed at helping students maximize their academic potentials. Additionally, we donate writing materials to support their educational needs. Recently, we partnered with a school in Lagos State, Nigeria, to sponsor an inter-house sports event and provide writing materials to the students. This initiative not only promoted physical fitness but also reinforced the importance of education. We also organized a training on the use of AI for both students and teachers. Looking ahead, we plan to partner with educational institutes to offer free training and home lessons for children who cannot afford private tutoring. This will include preparation for crucial examinations such as JAMB, WAEC, NECO and others.
