The United States is threatening to choke the supply of artificial intelligence chips to Switzerland just as the more efficient DeepSeek models boost innovation. If the export squeeze goes ahead from May, Switzerland would be restricted to around 16,500 best-of-class AI chips between 2025 and 2027. “Switzerland cannot afford to be compute constrained in the age of explosive AI growth,” says Marcel Salathé, co-director of the AI Center at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). https://lnkd.in/dHcaX5Dv

My latest for The Diplomat: Taiwan's pivotal role in global AI is often overlooked. Despite producing 90%+ of advanced AI chips, it's excluded from key int'l assessments. This data injustice distorts Taiwan's true potential. Time to decode its real AI capabilities. #TaiwanAI #TechPolicy

According to Science|Business, the #EuropeanCommission is considering funding for #digital #research, starting in 2025, and covers #AI, #quantum, #photonics, #chips, #networking and related fields. In all, the proposed calls would add up to €550 million, as part of a larger “cluster” of #industrial #technologies in #Horizon #Europe. Some of the calls under consideration are big, some small. One would set up a previously promised “hub” to interconnect European AI developers, as part of the GenAI4EU initiative. That initiative, announced as part of a big AI policy push last year by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, is supposed to develop novel uses of AI in 14 industrial sectors. The hub is intended to interconnect everybody involved in that, carry out a “comprehensive landscape analysis of generative AI initiatives,” and “support the uptake” of the resulting GenAI4EU solutions in other parts of Horizon Europe. It’s also supposed to “support the European Commission’s AI Office in its function to promote an innovative ecosystem of trustworthy AI.” The budget: €3 million, a relatively modest sum by tech industry standards. https://lnkd.in/dcFTEB-V

🚀 The AI Power Struggle: Unipolar vs. Bipolar Future? The latest AI arms race is heating up, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is making it clear: restricting China’s access to advanced AI chips is “existentially important” for the future of global dominance. With DeepSeek AI’s rapid rise, the conversation is no longer just about innovation—it’s about who controls AI and how it shapes the world. 🌍 Two Possible Futures? 🔹 A Bipolar World – Both the U.S. and China develop equally powerful AI models, fueling rapid advancements but intensifying competition. 🔹 A Unipolar World – The U.S. and its allies hold the advantage by restricting chip exports, securing a long-term lead in AI. ⚔️ But here’s the dilemma: While Dario Amodei argues that limiting China’s access is about national security, critics point out that the U.S. is also investing heavily in military AI applications. OpenAI, Google, and Amazon are already involved in defence contracts—so is this just about competition, or something more? 💡 The Big Question: Are we heading toward an AI future dominated by superpowers, or is there still a chance to create a more decentralized, collaborative approach to AI development? The debate is far from over, and its outcome will shape the future of AI far beyond technology itself. What’s your take? Should AI be controlled by a few, or should we push for a more open, global AI ecosystem? https://lnkd.in/ewnrGrmW Let’s discuss. 👇 #AI #Anthropic #DeepSeek #ArtificialIntelligence #TechGeopolitics #FutureOfAI #AIDominance #InnovationVsControl

As an IT officer in NATO, I’ve seen how AI reshapes defense and collaboration. The recent AI for the Public Interest Summit in Paris emphasized the need for global AI governance, echoing NATO’s own principles of transparency, ethical innovation, and collective security. Marc Volay AI has transformative potential in defense, from predictive maintenance to anomaly detection in cybersecurity. However, these advancements must be responsibly managed to prevent misuse. Like NATO, the summit advocated for risk mitigation, inclusivity, and a focus on AI that directly benefits society. This shared commitment to responsible AI governance is critical. By fostering global collaboration, we can ensure AI remains a force for peace, innovation, and public interest.
ANNOUNCING: FRANCE’S AI ACTION SUMMIT 🇫🇷 Artificial intelligence is shaping our societies, economies, and environment. To ensure its benefits are shared equitably, we must address risks like the digital divide and market concentration. Ahead of the AI Action Summit in France this February, work needs to be done to build an open, inclusive infrastructure that: - Promotes the accessibility of AI systems; - Encourages the development of more cost-effective models to serve the common interest; - Fosters access to structured datasets that respect individual freedoms to drive tangible AI breakthroughs in the areas of health and the environment; - Develops a greater distribution of access to computing power; - Trains future talents at global level; - Increases resources for auditing and evaluating models This initiative would be based on a multi-stakeholder governance and could have its own investment capacity. 🚨 Europe Must Act Now: A Call for a ‘CERN for AI’ 🚨 The world is moving fast in AI, and Europe risks falling behind. The U.S. is making massive investments in AI infrastructure, and China is rapidly advancing in generative AI—meanwhile, Europe faces a triple threat: 🔹 Loss of strategic sovereignty – Dependence on foreign AI tech like ChatGPT & NVIDIA makes Europe vulnerable. 🔹 Loss of cultural sovereignty – AI models reflect the priorities of their creators—are Europe's values represented? 🔹 Loss of economic competitiveness – Without decisive action, European industries risk stagnation in the AI revolution. To safeguard our future, CAIRNE (formerly CLAIRE) calls for a bold, coordinated effort: a ‘CERN for AI’—a European hub for AI research and innovation that ensures trustworthy, safe, and sustainable AI made in Europe, along with 6 steps for building such a major hotbed for AI talent, research and innovation. 📢 Read our open letter: https://lnkd.in/dQuvGzzn #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Europe #CERNforAI #Innovation #TechSovereignty #FutureofAI
