Today, and since a couple of months actually, 1970's dress-watches are a big thing in the watch world, even pushing the big boy Pateks into the background. However, this was not always the case 🤔 We've been big fans of brands such as Piaget, Chopard, and Cartier way before the hype, and were offering these style of watches since the start of WatchWorks back in 2016. The Patek Philippe reference 3633 in 18k white gold with its original onyx dial is a great example of an elusive, yet under the radar watch. From the 70s-80s, brands such as Patek, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, and of course Piaget have been experimenting with alternative stone materials, gold, and different designs. This era for watchmaking was arguably one of the biggest cultural changes and watch taste for the consumer public. Of course, dress watches and complications were still being produced and worn, but this “new, edgy” style of watches, even coming from Patek, a historically stiff brand when it comes to change, hasn’t been done before. It’s refreshing to see an infinite palette of bracelet and dial designs from big brands. After the 90s-2000s, alot of integrated allure stopped as it wasn’t in style much any more. We’re seeing collectors and the mainstream watch market rediscover the integrated watch design again. Many people first approaching the field of vintage watches aren’t sure where to start. Even if you have a boatload of money, getting a Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona out of the gate might not be the best foray into the space. Eric Wind compares it to someone buying their first painting and it being a Picasso; it would no’t really give you a proper understanding appreciation of the field. The list below contains 10 watches - some more general and some specific - that you should definitely know. If you are an aficionado, you may recognize most of these. If you are exploring vintage watches, this is a great place to start and hopefully will save you some time. Many of these are models I proactively hunt for clients, friends, and in some instances myself!

Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ceramic (Dress watch) - Thin enough to slide under any sleeve and sleek enough to catch any eye, this $18,200 Bulgari is a fully ceramic take on the beloved Octo Finissimo. 1 color, 3 hands, and a sub-seconds dial make this watch minimal enough to blend in anywhere unless there are discerning eyes around… Tudor Black Bay Ceramic (Everyday watch) - Sure, I could’ve chosen a $300K Royal Oak to close out this list but where’s the challenge in that? Instead, I’ve opted for Tudor’s humble Black Bay, a $5,000 workhorse that is as attractive to look at as it is comfortable to wear. This industry-favorite just screams ‘wear me’ in a very modest way.
