John Bastian hit 130% of his annual revenue target while landing some of our most strategic acquisition targets. Here’s how he did it: 1) Executive Alignment Deals get done at the top. Don’t wait for the end to align executives from both sides. 2) Multi-threaded motivation Many people are involved in evaluating mission critical technology. Understand their personal wins and how we help them win at the individual, team, and company levels. 3) Collaboration Seek perspectives from leadership and coworkers. You never know what you might uncover that is perfect for the current deal - proof point, piece of content, technical expertise, etc. Don't go at it alone. I’ll leave you with his key learnings: - Think far past deal closure - the work is only starting for your prospect once they sign a contract. Don't be the rep that disappears after contract signature. - Remain calm: fires and unexpected changes happen in every deal. Trust that you'll find a solution and don't let one issue in one account impact the rest of your work. - ALWAYS take care of your Solutions Architects - they're the real MVPs. When you need them, you want to be sure that they're going to back you up. As great as this year was for John, he’s just getting started! But more importantly, Greg’s got the attributes that are absolutely key for a Managing Director: passion, vision, and an eye for spotting opportunities. He’s already made such an impact in the few months he’s been consulting with us, shaking things up where we needed it, improving our operations, and driving fresh ideas to help us innovate and grow. I love this insight (shared by Brad Klune) from Jeff Bezoz who is definitely one of the mentors I look to for wisdom in business. His consistent and often militant strategy on customer service for Amazon is truly amazing and here he is discussing how he acquires companies based on whether they are lead by mercenaries or missionairies. Such a simple insight but for me this is profound as I now know I can categorize every business leader I have been exposed to as either a mercenary or a missionary. We can also categorize all the leaders we have in our team into these categories and here is the real wisdom. Unless you are in a crisis for survival you only want missionaries in your team as mercenaries will derive short term success for themselves and maybe you but will actually cause more damage than value over time! Are you fronting up as a missionary as a leader of your business and are you surrounded by missionaries? Have you mercenaries in your team that are counter productive to your and the Company’s success. This is a typical example of the type of conversations we have in Vistage UAE peer Advisory meetings. Through comparing each others experiences, insights and opinions we leave each meeting wiser for such conversations and better leaders to tackle the biggest issues we face. The monthly 4 hour Board meetings get our leaders out of the hustle and detail of their daily business life so they can work strategically on their business, something many leaders fail to do enough.
