A few weeks ago, I had the chance to pitch my business at a conference filled with passionate innovators. The energy was inspiring, and the theme of "collaboration over competition" was emphasized as a key value in our community. After my pitch, I approached two entrepreneurs with businesses similar to mine, hoping to learn potential synergies. I was excited about the possibility of sharing ideas and experiences to create value together. However, the conversations didn’t go as expected. Instead of openness, I was met with defensiveness, as if I was trying to take something from them. It made me think why do we still feel the need to compete, even in a community that encourages collaboration? Shouldn't we come together to grow collectively? Here’s what I’ve realized: real progress comes from partnerships. We don’t have to do it alone. By working together, we can achieve more. Working 'on' not 'in' the Business. As I kicked off year two of building The Grafter it remains a key priority for me that I spend a sufficient amount of my time as Founder and CEO working 'on' not just 'in' the business. This is sage advice comes from both a friend and colleague Rita Brockless who often challenged me on the amount of time I spent CEO-ing rather than diving in and fire fighting 🚒 at my last business. Solid advice that I still refer back to! Of course it's impossible at such an early stage not to have a high percentage of time delivering for clients and honestly I wouldnt want it any other way however an eye on the prize and ensuring I stay strategic is absolutely essential if we are to be as impactful as I want. As I reflect on my time last week I spent a chunk of time learning 📚 at London Tech Week and found myself somewhat unexpectedly having a discussion with someone I worked with before who I would love in the business as a shareholder/business partner helping deliver and grow what we have. Its conversations and meetings like that which are all about being On not In. Walking through the Strategy, reflecting on the ability to go further, faster as a team rather than as a sole founder and hearing the potential of the business is super powerful 🚀 This week sees plenty more 'on' not 'in' as we start today with the now infamous Grafter Breakfast at our new home the The Century Club today where we bring clients, prospects and awesome speakers (Gary Gamp is leading a debate on being more Commercial) together to inspire us and allow a healthy dose of chatham house debate! The back end of this week is in Amsterdam at HLTH and TNW where I'm meeting prospects, partners Jillian Vorce 🏳️🌈 and KRISTIN JACOBSEN and doing some public speaking about Growing and Selling Businesses. I have observed that business networking groups... can be a silent killer of true innovation. Unfortunately, most people confine themselves within the familiar walls of their entrepreneurial circles, often turning them into echo chambers. Which leads to… - Stagnation in creative thinking. - Missed opportunities for innovation. - Reinforcement of unchallenged, potentially flawed ideas. The way most people build their business network simply doesn’t work. Instead, you should actively seek out and embrace diverse perspectives outside of your usual networks.
