276 years after a portraitist and electricity researcher first experimented with electrical stimulation to improve hearing on the outside of the head, (creating a surprising, warm feeling from ear to ear, but not a recreatable hearing success). And 67 years after an electrode was placed in contact with a segment of a vestibular nerve during a surgical procedure, which was actually intended to graft a facial nerve on a cholesteatoma patient who experienced facial paralysis. 63 years after the first true single wire electrode CI, which couldn't yet allow differentiation between low, mid, or high frequencies was placed, and 46 years after the implantation of the first successfully commercialized multichannel CI... Recently I had the opportunity to collaborate with Caitlin Barr on an amazingly well thought out and put together presentation on Tinnitus, "Yearning for Silence". That opportunity has made me re visit my own journey in so many ways, facing my daily challenges and also wondering "how" we can further make a difference in supporting others moving forward. One VLOG that I recorded 4 years ago has received significant views, however what amazes me the most is that over 70% of those who start to watch this video finish it.. (stats are important). ALL of my Vlog content is reviewed by medical professionals for accuracy while maintaining a "patient/recipient" perspective that emphasises my lived experience. The connection between mental health and hearing health is becoming increasingly recognised, and it's encouraging that people are more willing to address and acknowledge it. Admitting to these challenges is a significant first step for many. "Yearning not only for silence but also for peace". The definition of peace is "freedom from disturbance; a state or period without war." Before I knew I was eligible for cochlear implants, I made a short film called "The Silent War." Living with hearing loss and Tinnitus is far from experiencing silence, peace, or a state of tranquil mental health. It's great to see a venue promoting the fact that it has had hearing loops installed. This is such a key part of creating hearing accessibility for customers and, in this case, passengers. If you're installing assistive listening systems today, do encourage the venue to shout about it on their website and on their social media channels. They can also promote it on IHLMA: The International Hearing Loop Manufacturers Association's 'Let's Hear' site and, depending on where in their world they are, their listing on Google Maps. Or if you're a venue that's switching on (and leaving on!) your new hearing loop, do share that information.
