With over 500 registrations and over 2000 views on the YouTube recording, Richelle's session was very popular. Did you know that a clinical trial done by the SAN hospital in Sydney, Australia, used light therapy on a cohort of Parkinson's patients? This trial was double-blinded, randomised, and sham-controlled, involving 40 patients.The 5 test areas included: - Walking gait - Tremor - Upper limb coordination - Lower limb coordination - Facial expression After the first 12 weeks, approximately 70% of the 40 trial participants reported improvements after using the active treatment, indicating that transcranial light therapy has potential to be an effective treatment for the motor symptoms of Parkinson's (McGee et al., 2023). What causes Parkinson's disease? This question has plagued scientists for centuries. Although we don't necessarily know the answer yet, there has been progress in understanding where this condition comes from. Parkinson's disease was famously described as a neurological condition and a "shaking palsy" by English physician, James Parkinson. However, recently, our collective understanding of the condition has evolved beyond this. As explained by a recent article published in the Washington Post, "People have, for the longest time, described Parkinson's disease as a top-down disease...Another hypothesis suggests that, in many patients, it may be a bottom-up approach, where it starts in the gut and goes all the way up to the brain." Research is suggesting that the gut might play a pivotal role in Parkinson's. For example, complications in the gastrointestinal tract often appear up to 20 years before the development of any motor symptoms. This underpins much of the work we do here at SYMBYX. Though it might seem unintuitive to target the gut for a neurological disease, we focus on the gut because research suggests so. It's wonderful to see more traction around this hypothesis for treating Parkinson's, and we can't wait to see more developments in the field.
