Ads running before shows? This is increasingly common. Artists including Ice Spice to Adele to Kendrick Lamar have had ads running before their recent shows. For the promoter/venue, it’s an additional source of revenue that helps minimize their risk. There’s not much upside for the artist as I see it unless the ads are promoting their products/music. The world's greatest advertisement - Tonight over 150 million people across the globe will tune into watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. Advertisers will pay $7million dollars for a 30 second slot and Apple have paid $50million to sponsor the half time show which will feature Usher. And how much will her get? Not a single penny. In fact Usher may well spend millions on tonight's performance. The Weeknd spent $7million on his half-time show and Dr Dre something similar in 2022. It's a long list of superstars that don't get paid a penny; Justin Timberlake, Prince, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, the Rolling Stones, Rihanna. So why do they do it? Exposure. Last year more people watched Rihanna's half-time show (118 million) than the game itself (115 million). Searches for her beauty brand Fenty went up by over 830%, she gained 3 million Instagram followers and became the most streamed artist globally. Usher released his album 2 days before the Super Bowl and he will expect his performance tonight to help him to the top of the Billboard Charts. His new tour will also benefit significantly - The Weeknd sold 1 million tickets after his performance. A little snippet from the “Elevating Your Merch Game” panel at Canadian Music Week. I was asked about uncharted/underutilized areas/missed opportunities. This is part one of my two part answer. Many thanks to publicist extraordinaire Fiona Bloom of The Bloom Effect for the capture!! 🎥 In summary, artists & their teams need to better capitalize on the artist/fan emotional connection at the live show and the immediate post show “concert high” or “afterglow”. It’s not mentioned in this capture, but our direct to fan app, Merch Cat Fan answers some of this as it allows fans to buy show merch before, during and after the show and pick up at the merch table or ship to home.
