WHAT IF... What if nobody comes? What if the marketing efforts are not enough? What if employers don't respond? What if I didn't reach out to enough people? What if I contacted all the wrong people? What if? What if? What if? Have you ever dreaded the second occurrence of a first success? I do! But why? As the Early Bird Deadline for the 2nd Annual Natural Sciences and Mathematics + Computer Science Career Fair approaches, I have given it a lot of thought, and I realize that despite all my efforts to keep work in the professional lane, I take things to heart. Providing career opportunities for the 6,000 Science and Technology students whom I am privileged to serve truly matters to me. Is my work-life balance off? Maybe. Is it off for my team? Probably. But is it worth it? Absolutely! To be the first career center of its kind that is fully student-run and to create legacy events that will continue to serve UH STEM students for the foreseeable future coupled with joining the ranks of hosting one of UH's largest career fairs in one year of operation feels like the right thing to do. Students: Are you ready to meet employers who want to hire computer science majors for internships and co-ops? Tennessee Tech’s engineering career fair is Feb. 8, and maybe you’re wondering, “How can a career fair help me?” For Nathanael Newton, a junior computer science major from Knoxville, Tech’s career fair was how he landed a one-year co-op with EOSYS Group in Nashville. As part of the digital transformation team, he built websites that connected operations technology data to the information technology network of client companies. He said the career fair helped him get the position by building his confidence: “Being able to go up and talk to people at the booths was a great confidence booster and helped me learn a lot about networking and making connections.” Watch the video to learn more. Stick yourself in a room of teenagers and you'll soon get brought back down to earth 😆 This week Harriet Pearson and I spent an afternoon at a 'speed dating' careers fair, speaking to over 60 students for just under 4 hours about our career pathways and what led us to our positions at Ripple. Things I've learnt... 👉 Let people have their hopes and aspirations - we don't always have to impose realities (of which can hinder growth and exploration) 👉 Your career pathways can be influenced significantly by your peers and who you surround yourself with 👉 The importance of soft skills - sometimes these can be overlooked, but considering these kids have lost years of social influence due to a pandemic and the increased use of digital technology, it's so important to encourage development in this area 👉 Mentorship matters - the role of mentors, be it teachers, professionals or family members is so important to guide students and provide insights to help them navigate their career paths successfully How do you think we can address the digital divide to ensure all students have equal opportunities for career development? #careersfair #studentexperience #mentorship #studentdevelopment

Did you spot us at The UK Careers Fair last week in Nottingham? With a busy month of HE/Careers fairs coming up, we're very much looking forward to meeting students across the country to chat to them about all that Staffordshire University has to offer. We recognise that busy HE/Careers fairs can sometimes feel overwhelming, so here are some top tips for making the most out of the events... ✏️Ahead of the event, find out who will be attending and highlight the institutions you definitely want to go and speak to ✏️When you first arrive, don't rush, take time to settle and get a feel for the event. Once you feel ready, start approaching stands to find out more about what they have to offer ✏️Remember, the people behind the stands are friendly and always happy to chat ✏️Have some pre-prepared questions and consider what is important to you (you can take a look at some examples below) ✏️Make the most of the opportunity and don't leave once you've spoken to the institutions on your list, keep an eye out for others that might interest you as you might discover the perfect university that you hadn't considered before ✏️ Don't forget to take a bag to put any prospectuses, guides and freebies in, they will help you remember who you've spoken to once you return home from the fair 5 questions to ask a university at a HE/Careers Fair: 1) Where is the university based and how many campuses do they have? 2) Do they have any Open Days or events coming up? 3) What facilities are available for the course you are looking to study? 4) Is it a city or campus university? 5) What is the accommodation like and how much does it cost? + you could also ask about finance, student life, societies and much more!

National Youth Careers Fair takeways It's wonderful to see my fellow young people engaging with such events and gaining valuable perspectives. My takeaways from key speakers yesterday ✅ 1. Pilato Wisdom: - "Your today, if not properly handled, can impair your future." - This emphasizes the importance of making wise choices and taking responsibility for our actions in the present. Our decisions today shape our path forward. 2. Daniel Kabani Advice: - "Be the youth in the arena, not the critic." - Rather than being a passive observer or critic, actively participate and take risks. Engage in meaningful endeavors, learn, and grow. Success comes from being in the arena, not from mere criticism. 3. Lyapa Mpempulwa-Mbewe 's Insight: - "Wealth creation favors the young." - This highlights the potential for young individuals to create wealth through their efforts, innovation, and hard work. It's a reminder that youth is a time of opportunity. Remember, each day's consistent efforts contribute to your growth and future success. If you're a young person in Powys and want to go to University, it's pretty much a given that you've got to the leave the county to go to university. There are exceptions of course, like the Open University - and Grŵp Colegau NPTC Group of Colleges offers some university-level qualifications - but the general trend is that students and graduates from Powys leave, whether they like it or not! For students and graduates from Powys this means that they become disconnected from employers in Powys - it is much easier to connect with organisations in their new local area, perhaps at a careers fair in their university. For employers in Powys looking for degree-educated talent, it means that your local supply of graduates aren't actually local anymore! This is why we're trying something different this September. On the 9th of September, at Hafan yr Afon in Newtown, in parnership with Tyfu Canolbarth Cymru | Growing Mid Wales, we're putting on a careers event to connect students and graduates with employers in Powys. We've chosen a date that means that students can attend while they are back home with their families outside of term time.
