Strategist & Academic. Into: EdTech, New Media, Social Media Platforms, Information Literacies, Lifelong Learning, Blockchain & Digital Identity. Associate Professor, University of Malta. Director 3CL Foundation
Turf-protectionism tends to be a universal trait in the education sector, irrespective of the country and the type and context of the institution. I've sat in many meetings where people from compulsory education, higher education, TVET, adult education (including those working in informal and non-formal learning and in EC directorates) often chose to demonstrate their expertise within the silos of their job description or the world views of the institution that employed them. I found that the best way of getting people to move away from polarised views is to shift the discourse from 'education' to 'lifelong learning'. In the credentialing sector, this was particularly prescient: take a momentary break from sparring about diplomas, Europass, universities vs TVET organisations and micro-credentials and focus on the learning we all need throughout the different stages of our life. Add to the mix the clear disconnects between the knowledge and skills of young people, and the expectations of the labour market - and eventually you can encourage people to meet on the same page to determine what can be done to empower learners, of any age. Earlier this month, after a workshop with my University of Malta students, Katarina Pietrzak was my guest for a podcast on lifelong learning with Ian Farrugia, a former student, and Alex Galea, a regular contributor to our GenZ videos at the 3CL Foundation. Katarina anchors the lifelong podcasts for the RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. You may find something of interest in this conversation since our lifelong learning is now very much dependent on podcasts and stories like these. I know it's an hour-long conversation. But I learned a lot doing this.
