Pleasure to speak today at the Westminster Forum Projects event on decarbonising transport in London. I've taken endless notes from Lilli Matson's keynote address on the challenges and opportunities on London's path to net zero. The main points from me covered: > It is hugely positive for UK's global reputation that London is a leader on this agenda. Not always leading the pack, but in the top 20 on many lists focused on sustainable mobility. > Central to its current leadership position is a net zero goal that is aligned with keeping 1.5 degrees of warming in reach, backed by the evidence of what's needed to deliver it. > Although London's per capita transport emissions are low for the UK, the total transport emissions within its scope of influence are higher than Wales, Northern Ireland and the North East. It will also play a crucial role in decarbonising transport in the South East (our highest emitting region on transport) and beyond. > The UK and England don't have car use reduction targets but if they did it would acknowledge that we need to reduce car travel by around 25% in England by 2030. The current UK government may not like some of the policies used to get there but London's ambition to cut car kms travelled by 27% will clearly be important to this UK-wide shift in behaviours. > We shouldn't make the mistake of thinking of London as one, homogenous city. Like all our cities it is made up of many different communities with a range of different transport needs and behaviours. The ULEZ expansion made clear quite how different the starting point is between inner and outer London. Per capita transport emissions are at least 3 times higher in Hillingdon (London's highest transport emitter) than Islington. A third of households in Islington own a car vs over three quarters in Hillingdon. Delivering net zero rests on the ability to decarbonise the outer London boroughs. > The Clean Cities Campaign's ranked 36 European cities in 2022 based on who was on the right track to reach net zero by 2030. Ahead of London sit Oslo, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Paris, Stockholm, Ghent, Munich, Brussels, Barcelona and Lyon. 11 cities (at least!) to learn from and work with on this agenda. > There are many challenges to achieving net zero transport by 2030, the three I referenced today were: 1) Ensuring we have people with the right skills, resources (inc. long-term funding certainty) and powers in place to deliver at pace, 2) Coordinating action across different tiers of government and beyond, and 3) Maintaining a public mandate for action. I limited myself to one recommendation today. London, like all cities and tiers of government, should put in place a well-resourced net zero engagement strategy that delivers both effective communication with the public and provides genuine opportunities for Londoners to shape the design of transport policies to ensure interventions are seen to be fair and effective. #london #transport #decarbonisation

The following article on the #EuropeanUnion’s #CorporateSustainabilityReportingDirective (#CSRD) from Business Travel News Europe posits that the mandatory disclosure of #carbonemissions - particularly significant #scope3emissions - from #businesstravel is an opportunity for #reporting consistency and transparency 📈📉 From a #travelmanager's perspective, this is a watershed moment for being “more accountable for steps taken to carry out the organization’s purpose, goals and objectives” as they “educate the rest of the business” on how their travel program is “helping with decarbonization.” That’s where our #sustainabilityreports come in 📊 They provide insights into #carbonemissions for all #groundtravel based on a unified methodology across all providers, whether #ridehail, #taxi, or #privateblackcar. #Travelmanagers can translate these easily into #carbonreduction measures, from #travelpolicy changes to benchmarking progress continually. Many thanks to Thrust Carbon for hosting an engaging Sustainability in Motion webinar last week focused on carbon budgeting within leading travel programs. 🛫 Hearing from industry experts Jill Smit of Arcadis and Johnny Thorsen of Spotnana provided invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of sustainable business travel. Their perspectives illuminated the significant role that carbon budgeting plays in driving decarbonisation efforts. Effectively implementing carbon budgets is essential for companies aiming to reduce their environmental impact and align with global sustainability goals. As we move forward, it's clear that integrating these practices will be key to fostering a more sustainable travel industry. I’m excited to apply what I’ve learnt to drive change and make informed decisions that prioritise the planet’s future in my professional endeavors. 🌎 #sustainability #decarbonisation #sustainabletravel #thrustcarbon

The annual ITM | Institute of Travel Management conference is just around the corner, and with it comes the chance to explore and discuss some of the burning topics in business travel today. One subject in particular, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), is something that I am already passionate about – more specifically, the question of offsetting vs. investing. So, I thought I might break it down. Firstly, offsetting, which has had many projects and methods thrown at us over the last few years, but some might say is this just green-washing. Investing, on the other hand, means supporting sustainable alternatives to conventional jet fuels, like Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Made from renewable sources, SAF slashes carbon footprints and serves as a direct reduction of emissions. So, should you offset or invest? Well, it depends on what is most important to you and your business goals. By investing in SAF, you can cut carbon emissions at their source – while offsetting merely balances the emissions you cause. It also depends on your budget. Investing in SAF is pricier now, but it does promise a more sustainable future. While offsetting costs can vary greatly and is a short-term fix. In my opinion, SAF investment is the proactive choice, directly curbing aviation emissions – but what do you think? If you’re interested in SAF and offsetting carbon emissions, you can learn more in London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Greenskies report: https://lnkd.in/ea_9mZyW #ACETravel #ITM #SustainableAviation #OffsetVsInvest #GreenSkies
