🚨 New Blog! 📊 🖥 ☁ By acquiring Cameyo, Google fully commits to enterprise EUC For me, Google has always been in the periphery of End User Computing, primarily because of its historical lack of acknowledgement of the need for Windows apps in organizations. I always chalked this up to Google not being able to run Windows apps, so it just chose to ignore them as “legacy” and focus on “modern” organizations. (I can imagine plenty of awkward conversations when showing Google Sheets to a company steeped in Excel macros.) Microsoft needs a challenge. I really think the age of the Linux desktop is right around the corner, 3-5 years maybe. You can no longer even create local accounts through the GUI in the default deployment of Windows 11, so every user has to have a Microsoft live account, unless you revert to the net command via the CLI, use 3rd party utilities, or do a special image that is beyond most users. We really should stop referring to Microsoft endpoints as PC's, as the term implied a personal computer system that the end user had complete control over. This countered the mainframe dynamic where all workloads ran on shared systems in the computer room. if the current trend continues, all Microsoft PCs will be part of a universal cloud compute system and the user will have almost no control over what is running on thier computer, and data flows freely between the PC and the cloud. Any careful analysis of the application list, processes and logs will show that we are almost there. I believe this reduction of control Microsoft is imposing on its users with every new release, as well as the increased stability, features and ease of use in Linux, as covered in this article, will be a strong factor in the adoption of the Linux desktops in corporate environments over the next decade, especially in highly technical and scientific organizations .
