What started as a one-off SEC filing, turned into a months long project to examine size and scope of gender-neutral terms in the S&P 500. Excited to share our findings in Bloomberg Businessweek/Bloomberg News that since 2020, the number of companies changing to "chair" or "chairperson" from "chairman" has more than tripled. Though the trend is slowing during a conservative-led backlash to DEI initiatives, potentially curbing a complete adoption from all companies in the index. Today we've published a great data-driven Bloomberg Businessweek / Bloomberg News story looking at how the number of S&P 500 companies using the gender-neutral “chair” or “chairperson” board title has tripled since 2020. But the trend is slowing as the conservative-led backlash to DEI policies grows, potentially curbing this shift before it hits a tipping point. We analyzed company bylaws and other corporate governance language from more than 2,000 regulatory filings to uncover this trend; there's a methodology at the bottom of the story if you want more details. Zachary Fleming and Cameron Baker did a great job reporting out the story, speaking with several S&P 500 female chairs and even Nancy Pelosi, who as House speaker in 2021 drove Congress to adopt gender-neutral language. "The more valuable a company is, the more likely it is to have jettisoned the chairman moniker.
