The Southern Great Plains is home to a unique set of wildlife species that are specifically adapted to this wide-open stretch of grassland. Pronghorn, swift fox, prairie chicken, and other year-round residents live alongside human residents who are engaged in the ranching of livestock, primarily beef cattle. Today NFWF and partners announced nearly $7.4 million in grants through the Southern Plains Grasslands Program to improve grassland health, support biodiversity and increase carbon sequestration to improve climate resilience. By working to conserve this vital ecosystem, we’re providing essential resources to sustain and recover wildlife, increase climate resilience, and support the livelihoods of ranchers who steward this landscape. Such a great program and the buy-in from ranchers is crucial as much of the grasslands are private lands!
