For this month's designer showcase series, we're excited to feature Bill Goff and the stunning outdoor transformation he helped create! Read more to get a closer look at Bill's design process: "This client had a problem with everyone always going up the far left staircase to her upper deck and knocking on her sliding glass door because they thought that was her front entrance. The problem was even worse at night as the only light you could see was on the upper deck. She wanted an obvious front entrance leading to her front door and to push the retaining walls closer to the house to get more driveway space. I showed her photos & drawings I had done of other projects with lights on the walls which we could use to illuminate a paver pathway to her new steps and then end at her actual front door. She loved the idea of lighting the pathway and is amazed how it all turned out." It's always incredible to watch the homeowner's vision come to life. Awesome job Bill!

Most things are not designed. They are simply made. Consider architecture. If you take the time to look around—most buildings are ordinary and unremarkable. They make little to no impression. By contrast, I still vividly recall the experience of driving into the small parking lot directly beneath Santiago Calatrava's addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, even though it was over 20 years ago. The building's massive, bleached-white structural ribs curved to the asphalt floor in rows. With the low ceiling, it felt claustrophobic, like the belly of a whale. A short walk from the car led to a set of stairs winding around the outside of a circular opening, immediately bringing you into the massive atrium's center. Light streamed across the expanse in linear patterns from the building's immense "wings" above. The contrast of moving between the two interconnected spaces was visceral and powerful. Graphic design is more ephemeral than architecture. Because design is not the elements you use—words, images, typography, color, shape, or form. And it's not the output you create—a site, product, identity, brochure, or campaign. It's far more powerful. Design is about the ideas you advance that strike a chord, solve a problem, change a mind, and make a difference. It's easy to say and hard to do. But always worth the effort. #design #strategy #creativity

We all know that mirrors can make a room appear larger, but they can also be used as a design element to help complete whatever look you're looking for. A mirror can provide either contrast or balance when used correctly. It can also unify a space or serve as the focal point. #realtyworldrocks #gtownrealtor #centralkyrealestate #georgetownkyrealestate

I wanted to share my thoughts about a competitor's project which has been built near me. It features very prominantly on their website, but not the completed pictures. Instead they show series of fancy renders with large areas of glazing, dramatic double height spaces and lots and lots of zinc cladding. It's a pretty high end design. One will that would need a BIG budget to complete. But is that what's been built? Unfortunately not. There's no zinc cladding. It's a plain, white, rendered box. Tiny french doors at a standard height sit where all that lovely glazing should be. There may be some double height spaces but it definitely won't be as dramatic as it should be thanks to those aforementioned tiny doors. It's probably going to be pretty dark if I'm honest. I can see the clients have had to make a lot of tough choices to get the first phase of the project finished within their budget. It clearly wasn't enough to realise the designer's vision. I'd imagine, it's been pretty stressful for them to go from the design they've been sold on [and probably fallen in love with] to what they have now. And so unnecessary. Good design doesn't have to be expensive, but you have to consider the budget at the start of the design process. If the designer had considered the budget earlier, they could have retained some of the drama and wow of the original design but with a more modest material palette and a simpler form. If you're looking for an architect, don't be fooled by computer renders on a website. Look out for completed projects, strong client testimonials and a good cost management process that will help you to carefully manage your budget. These things matter. You might spend a bit more in fees to get this, but in the long run it will save you lots of time, money and heartache.... I don't want to give away any secrets to the practice's identity so I'm not going to share any images of the renders or the completed build. Instead, here's a shot of my own extension which is just round the corner and looks more or less [albeit a bit more unfinished than I'd like] as it was designed to. #NotesFromASmallPractice #DreamHome #ResidentialArchitecture 📸 : Dug Wilders
