In-platform attribution was flawed even before the third-party cookie phase-out.
Two reasons why:
👉 short lookback windows
👉 attribution bias
Platforms like Meta credit conversions to clicks within 7 days and views within just 1 day.
(It did have 28-day click, 28-day view and 7-day view windows, but Apple's ATT put an end to that.)
This narrow window fails to capture the complete customer journey, which often takes longer.
Both Meta and Google also have an interest in making their platforms look like the sole heroes of your marketing success story, encouraging you to spend more.
This leads to overstated results, ultimately resulting in misguided decisions regarding budget allocation.
Be mindful of these factors the next time you analyse your attribution data.
